Tyre blowout at 80mph

I'm up in the Hull area for a few days working.

I had a rear tyre blow out today while driving on the M18 between Doncaster and Hull. I was in the fast lane driving just less than 80mph. I heard the 'pop' of the tyre blow over my loud music, but then thought it was part of the song playing on the radio. It was very windy this morning and although
I then felt the car was wobbling slightly, initially I thought it was the wind. After turning the music down, I could here the racket coming from the rear.

I got into the hard shoulder safely and I'm very impressed with how the car handled and how safe it was at this speed. The tyre was wrecked.
Luckily I had just passed a Highyways Agency vehicle on a mile or two before, so they were soon up behind me and gave me some protection while I changed the wheel in the hard shoulder. It was a hard job, in the strong wind, puddles on the ground and in smart clothes!

My boot was full, so emptying this made quite a pile of stuff on the hard shoulder. I wish the 3rd row seats didn't need lifting to get to the bolt to release the spare wheel. If only it could be offset and put on the rear edge of the floor or under the hatch flap. What made it worse today, is that my (full size) spare already had a screw in the tyre. So now that I'm driving on this again, I have had to get this patched in Hull today. Therefore had to empty the boot again Evil or Very Mad.

I've ordered a new Pirelli Scorpion tyre from a local supplier back at home. Just hope I don't get another puncture before I'm back otherwise I'm Censored .

BTW, the Highways Agency staff who stood and watched me for 40 mins were driving a Shogun. They said that they are frequently getting punctures. One of their Discovery 3's had three punctures in a week!!
Our motorways are littered with debris.

Good to know it handled okay Matt, I've been driving around for the last 5k with golf ball sized bulges (care of Morocco) in two of my MTRs just waiting for a blow out so I can see how the DSC copes, they're just too tough though, even with the bulges I reckon the sidewalls are still a strong as a normal tyre

They are not permitted to assist on the grounds of H&S Wink ....they just have to put the cones out in 'forcefield formation' and then stand there with their arms crossed talking about how hard they are going to see to the Mrs when they get home Rolling Eyes

blow out

Matt, sorry to hear of you tail. I was talking to Slimer the other evening about rigging a system that allows the spare tyre lowering without popping up the back seats.
We reckon that a socket cane be palced on the drive nut with adaptors to take the drive down to 1\4 inch. Pierce a hole in the plastic cover over the nut and push the 1\4 inch drive through. Take the plastic covers off of the inner hinges in the rear seats and carefully re fold them. You should now be left with the drive for the socket just sticking up between the seats. Will be doing this this weekend.

It can be done, I leave a socket permanently on the spare wheel winch and stick a 1/4" extension bar down the gap between the seats (removing the plastic covers off the inner supports makes this easier) to use it. I was using the extension bar to flick the rubber cover off but Nicks idea of just putting a hole in it and leaving the bar in place should work even better

Its easy fix chaps, take the plastic trim off the seats in said place. Get a 22mm 1/2" drive socket and an extension bar that is about 4" long. put the socket and bar on to the spare wheel winch bolt head, fold the seats into the closed position and hey presto the female end of the extension bar is flush with the load deck.

The 1/2" drive is a tight fit between the seats and a smaller 3/8 drive would be better. I used the 1/2 drive because it finished flush with the load deck and I had an old 1/2 drive socket set kicking round spare.

I will post pictures tomorrow.
In the Beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

Agree with that, used this for Morocco with a 3/8" socket & 'wobble' extension - forgot to mastic the socket on though and ended up fishing for it after a particularly hard landing Rolling Eyes
