HI
I have read that a few have had problems with turbos going wrong. Does anyone know if a Turbo timer would work on a D3? have had them on other cars that I have had no problem at all with.

Simply because it seems that you may not understand why the Turbo's are packing up. It's not mainly the Turbo failing, its the ancilaries attached ie the Variable Vane Pack fails either leaving the vanes fully open or closed shut. This gives the fault and restriction of power. Only way to solve is replacing the unit as a whole.
To make sure you dont have problems, or limit the problems is to daily give the D3 a good booting, enough to clear the soot from the system, and in doing so will fully exercise the variable vanes full open and closed, thus realeaseing the soot deposits that clog and jam them.
Been there, and done it.....Not nice

That cleared that up for me I will give it a heavy foot ever day. I can defo do that  . Better than replacing me thinks!

Does anybody know what make/model the turbo is on a d3?
My passat tdi has a garret variable vane turbo and you can split it open to clean the mechanism. '05 D3 HSE, Logic 7, fridge, 4x4info, and more to come!

Even if you can split open a D3 turbo and clean it... have you seen where it is... by the time you have got to it and taken it off I think you will have decided to change it 
With the well documented problems I had with mine (which turned out to be the inter cooler)!, one thing was a common suggestion from the dealer, turbo specialists and independents... avoid cheap supermarket fuel and use Shell V Power or similar... I only use Shell now and it runs loads better.
Turbo Technics told me they see Landrover turbos coming in for stripping and cleaning as low as 30 k miles if people just do local journeys - it seems a heavy boot helps but you certainly can't beat clean fuel in the first instance IMHO

Having had mine recently replaced, I was told it's a Borg-Warner KKK. The problem with them is that they can be cleaned up and will work fine, EXCEPT that B-W won't release the software for the electrics. Hence all the replacements.
If that's true, LR want stuffing as there's only them stupid enough to fall for that.
So I'm told..................... Oh, and my memory ain't quite what it was!
