Turbo replacement.. Best turbos? Oval autos? other options?!
Hi All,
Having had my damaged Discovery 4 repaired a few years ago, the air box was smashed and this was sucked into the turbo.
I had the body removed and turbo replaced but it looks like some plastic was left in the pipes someware and its damaged the blades on the new turbo
The car still runs fine with no error codes, it just whistles, the garaged checked and confirmed blade damage.
I think my local garage would be happy to replace the turbo if they did not have to remove the body..I really wish I had space to install a 2 post ramp and remove the body myself but no luck, unless I can find a waterproof one and put it on the side drive!!
I'm in Cheltenham and have heard of places companies near Birmingham, "Best Turbos" and also seen a few comments about Oval Autos on this forum.
Can anyone comment on these places or alternatives?
I read something about Best Turbos being able to remove the Turbo without removing the body by removing the studs and tapping out for bolts to mount the new turbo.. has anyone had this done?
cheers
Kev

Hi Kev,
I'm just down the road from you in Swindon. I traveled to Oval Autos, they removed my body, replaced the inlet manifolds and also replaced the cambelts all in 1 day. I'd recommend them all day long.
You are also 'close' to Alltrack 4x4 on Malvern. So far I've only used them for an MoT, but had a good chat with the owner Tim. I can see why he is highly recommended here and on Facebook groups.
You might have a wait to get booked in, but that is a good sign.
Didn't someone on here fit a new cartridge into the turbo body ? Is that doable body on?
Might have been Harold ( Motolab ).

Also ... seems odd that a lump of plastic took years to dislodge to f**k the turbo..

Hi,
Thank for the info so far, I'll give those places a call and see what they say and of course find out how much!
I know the owner of the place who took the body off, the body was fixed by a friend of mine in the trade, so it was really a bit of mis-communication, I forgot to tell them they MUST check the pipes/intercooler etc for old bits of plastic.
It was a genunine new JLR turbo they fitted and it took about 10 months or so (and only 1000 or so miles) until I heard the whistle noise start, again I should have stopped straight away but i thought it was a leak to drove it for a couple of weeks, big mistake..
Best turbos seem to do a lot of these so I'm suprised no one has commented on them.
cheers

My car is in at Best Turbos as we speak for potentially 2 new turbos
I havent found much on here about them but they seem to get very good reviews online and my car was delivered to them at 5.30pm last night and they were on the phone at 8.20am this morning so im impressed with that so far (This was after it was at an indy garage for 2 weeks before they could even consider looking at it and then they said they were 80% sure it was the passanger side turbo and that they couldnt do any more on it until at least the 11th May!
