The turbo actuator arm and the coat hanger ...
Thought I’d throw this word of caution out there.
I’ve posted a few times about my dodgy turbo, and after a frustrating trip to and from London, where the car dropped to limp mode a few times, figured I’d give the turbo another good soaking with WD40, and a wiggle the actuator arm some.
In this, I managed to pop the socket for the control arm off the ball joint of the actuator arm!
Apologies for not getting a photo of it displaced, but I was bricking myself at the time.
The ball and socket joint (circled) had the socket pop off in the direction of the arrow.
It was noticeable as there was an increased gap between the neck of the socked and the base plate of the actuator arm (parallel lines).
Thankfully it didn’t completely displace but the looseness was marked!
The main impact of this was that the socket did not have enough clearance to get past the bolt head (marked X) so would impact on it during its travel.
The was noticeable during the ignition on and off exercise cycle.
I was able to wedge a flat blades screwdriver in there an pop the socket back onto the ball, and now everything works as it should again.
Have to say I was contemplating how to tell my wife a new turbo was going to be needed, but test run should the car back to its normal self with a good amount of power, so turbo working.
I think it happened when I got the coat hanger tool with the howl between the neck of the socket and the base of the actuator arm, but behind the control is I think caused enough leverage to pop the socket off the ball.
Moral of the story is, if you are daft enough to stick a coat hanger where it doesn’t belong, be damn careful where you stick, be damn careful of how you wiggle it, , and try do it under direct vision and film it if possible.
