Trying to value my D3....

Hi all,

First off, I am not 100% sure if this was the right place to post this, so apologies if not.

It’s been a while since I posted on here. I am pleased to report that is primarily because I have been out happily enjoying my D3 over the last few years. It’s taken me to all sorts of interesting places and been a key player in the house renovation I recently undertook, ferrying building materials around and acting as a source of cups of tea when there was no electricity or water connected!

However, time marches on and situations change. I am looking at making a change for something a bit newer and more suitable for my needs these days, and hopefully to see me through the next decade or so. I’ve had my D3 about 11 years, and it is now just over 19 years old. It has served me well and honestly, it’s has taken many back and forth debates to decide to explore the option of potentially selling it.

The preference would be to sell it all in one. As you can see, to strip it right back to stock and sell all the parts individually would be a lot of work! As such, it's a little hard to value.

I know roughly how much I *think* it’s worth all in but I am curious to see what the community thinks first. I'll post my thoughts later but I don't want to influence what others think. Perhaps would be ideal for someone looking to get into a D3 for overlanding, off roading or travelling without all the work?

Let me know if you think i've missed any key details off. I haven't opted to provide photos at this time as it's in need of a wash!

Basics:
2005 Discovery 3 HSE 2.7 TDV6 - Automatic
Cream leather interior with black carpet.
196000 miles
MOT until January 2025
Lower VED tax bracket due to first registration date.
All service / repair history and invoices included in a box file.
Cherished for 11 years of ownership. No expense spared on the important parts. Mechanically a well looked after vehicle. All major works done to ensure many more years of service. Tyres and brakes have plenty of life left in them. Interior is in very good condition with no broken parts other than some age-related wear which can’t be avoided.
The bulk of mechanical work has been completed to a high standard by Mansfield 4x4 in Bury St Edmunds. All electrical work is fused, tidy where feasible and out of sight. No random trailing cables over the dashboard and engine bay.

Accessories:
Fixed tow bar with ball and pin. Bike carrier bracket attached. I can throw in the bike carrier.
Britpart FBH Controller installed
CTEK D250SE DC/DC charger with MC4 input connector tails ready to accept solar
T-Max battery indicator left on dash from previous installation for voltage info
Auxillary battery installed
Tuff-Rok USB/12v panel in dash
CB Radio mounted under dash and fully connected to LRP Aerial mount and aerial.
Amateur radio mounted and fully wired to aerial on roof rack
Guardsman dog guard
Custom made roof console with USB ports, 12v sockets, Mag mount for fist mic, twist lock for hand held radio of choice and cubby. Tidy and covered in same colour cloth as headlining.
RAM Phone mount attached to dash.
Ultimate 9 EVC-X Throttle controller installed
LRP Easy-lift suspension controller installed.
Clearview 2nd generation wing mirrors installed – Shipped all the way from Aus! I’ll include the originals.
Wilderness lighting LED light bar – Very powerful. Usually fitted to combine harvesters
Wilderness lighting LED rear spots x2 with diffused lens.
RVL Amber flashers front and rear with switch on roof console.
Terrafirma swing away wheel carrier with upgraded stainless-steel gas strut.
Rear and boot seats removed to install a custom surface / storage with anchor points in place of rear seats. Original seats would be included in a sale should the new owner which to reinstate them.
D44 Front bash plate (original guard can be included)
D44 Transmission bash plate (original guard can be included)
D44 front suspension arm bash plates
D44 fuel tank guard (brand new, not fitted)
Compressor guard (not fitted) – Believed to be an early Prospeed version
4x Terrafirma black 18” steel wheels with nearly new Patriot/Radar Renegade tyres (I can include all the original wheel nuts and locking wheel nuts for alloys).
1x 18” alloy spare with Cooper Discoverer ST-Maxx w/cover
Transmission oil pan replaced for aluminium upgraded pan (better cooling, reusable).
EGR’s blanked but everything left in situ.
Powerful UK Nappa Leather and piano black steering wheel (I’ll include the original).
Rear windows tinted
Dash mat (so dash is in very good condition)
Mantec load lugga installed
Over sun visor dash cam with rear camera installed to act as a replacement review mirror and reversing camera as the dog guard and fridge restricts visibility.
Anderson plug installed in front grill and wired to starter battery for quick jump starting and accessory connection. Rubber boot cover.
Frontrunner rear seat footwell water tank (40L) with hoses and valves.
iKamper Mini Roof tent with insulation liner and shoe rack. Integrated USB ports and carpeted floor.
Frontrunner Slimline 2 full length roof rack with wind deflector, includes Hi-lift mount, light bar mounts, spotlight mounts, aerial mounts and bottle opener.
Frontrunner quick release tent mounts for roof rack
Howling Moon 270º Swing Awn 2.5m – Olive
Genuine Safari Snorkel fitted and sealed
Wind deflectors for front and rear windows
Frontrunner rear draw system
ClearView Easy Slide for fridge, mounted on top of Frontrunner draw system
Dometic CFX50 Fridge freezer
Boot area LED lights and switch
Genuine Land Rover rubber mats
Spare N/S/F complete CV / driveshaft assembly w/castle nut included as they are the ones that seem to go pop most often.

Major work / work of note:
Automatic transmission rebuilt by Bristol Transmissions in 2016. New torque converter, new transfer box input shaft. New rear prop. Flushed every couple of years since.
Body lifted and cylinder heads removed in 2017 to extract glow plugs, refurbish heads and install new glow plugs. Water pump, body mounts, various pipes and other parts preventatively changed at the same time including cambelt (Now due in 30k miles).
FBH replaced and fully functional!
Breather pipe recall performed (little one next to radiator)
Suspension compressor replaced for AMK unit in 2020.
Drivers heated seat element and padding replaced to ensure many more years of comfy warm bums.
Tow socket replaced a year ago, so it’s good to go for a while now.

Negatives:
iKamper mini finish has faded on top and is no longer glossy.
Front and rear parking sensors have stopped working. Never looked into it but not a major thing to replace them.
A bit of light scratchiness on sides due to contact with foliage when off road. Will buff out.
Mud flaps have torn off
Couple of chips in the windscreen (repaired)
A couple of small marks on headliner (one from trying to install a life hammer mount, the other looks like someone caught it with a cigarette. I am not a smoker).
A small portion of clearcoat about the size of a 50p has peeled off the boot. Can’t really be seen and has not increased in size since it happened some 4 – 5 years ago.

A full valet would be carried out prior to a sale. A proper decent one, not a quick in and out job in Tesco’s carpark!

Keen to hear your thoughts on this one! I know I haven’t covered everything as there I lots of other bits and pieces but not worth writing them all up.

Sounds like lots of work done on it. Got any pics?

On a price front - High mileage, old Discos are not worth much. I don't think all the extras are going to be worth much at all unless you strip them and sell separately. Most people will see lots of off road gear fitted and avoid it TBH.

Hard to say without some pics. £5k maybe?

I reckon you are right. Most of the value is in the accessories. The D3 itself wouldn't be worth much due to mileage and age. It's mechanically well looked after but I'm not sure how much that will help with value now.

I will probably pop up a post for all the parts and start breaking it, so if anyone sees anything they want, keep on eye on the for sale section!
