Tree sliders as per e bay 221881246701

This post is just to gauge interest, nothing will be done until someone has looked at or possibly tried them on the car to check quality, fit and that they do stick out far enough.

Please read below or this post http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic134428.html for more information and prices.

I have nothing to do with this person other than seeing the add and asking about a group buy.

Right gents I have had a reply from Martin who is happy to go ahead with a group buy so I will start a thread gauging interest in these.
This is the e bay number eBay Item No. eBay Item No. 221881246701

As you will see they are on for £260 inc delivery, the seller has agreed that if we can get a group buy of more than 10 he will do them at £180 plus £20 deliver or you can collect direct from him. I approached Martin and suggested £200 a set plus delivery and £20 goes to the forum but Martin being Martin as said he would be happy with £10 only per set to the forum Bow down Bow down
They are 4mm plate and 3mm wall tube, I have not seen any in the flesh myself as he is a long way from where I live but he is happy for a forum member to go round to them Shirebrook Nottinghamshire and look or even try a set on the car.

Madrilleno has already said they are just up the road and he may go and have a look so I will PM him to see if he can check them out.

Baz2236 is also picking a set up from Peterborough so will see what he thinks as well before we go ahead with the group buy.

This looks like it may be a really good buy. The pay off me that always wants every thing built really heavily would bet interested in the slightly thicker versions that may be available for about £50 more.
Are there any others like me that would prefer this?

By the way. .. I'm not trying to cause problems. Always appreciate the effort that goes into these buys!

When I get mine Sunday I will take some pics and let you know what there like. I had tree sliders for my 90 from these guys and they got quite a lot of abuse through the years.

Silly questions
1, how are they fixed to the car?
2, do they replace the plastic cill's?

Yes, they replace the sill covers, they are bolted on with about 10 bolts each side. The bolt holes are already there. You need to remove the sill covers and drill out the plastic clips and then fit Thumbs Up

So, went along to see Carl after work today. Thoroughly nice chap, and has a good amount of experience in sheet metal work.

The sliders looked to be of good quality for the price. The welds appeared to be fairly consistent and neat. Materials were as earlier a stated, 4mm plate an 3mm wall tube. He has used mild steel for construction, comensurate with the cost. Powder coating was well applied and even. The choice of mild steel will mean that corrosion will be a problem later if scrapes are not treated regularly.

There are two detrimental points.

1. The tubes do not protrude far enough to protect the doors from careless opening of car doors.

2. More importantly, the bottom seal strip on the doors stands off by about 5mm at the extremities, and about 10mm in the middle. Whilst these strips are not part of the wading seal system around the door opening itself, i believe that this will allow salt spray in winter to enter under the door more than it should.

I also suggested that he lengthen the tubes as far as possible.

Carl is aware of these points and is giving thought to how he can change the design to address them.

As for me, I'm going the hang on and see what he comes up with.

All tree sliders change the gap with the door seal - making it either larger (almost all designs) or smaller (latest ProSpeed). The trick is to replace the outer seal to as required to correct the gap.

The sheet metal has to sit tight on the vehicle so that the loads are spread evenly and not taken by the fasteners alone.

The contour follows the sill pretty well. I'm aware of the custom seals, but these are what might be called a beta version. We discussed the question of producing custom seals, but this would add significant time and cost to the design. Instead, Carl us considering modifying the profile slightly to produce a ridge mating with the seals. However, this was only part of some ideas we were throwing around.
