Transmission fault

Hi Everyone,

i have just got my hands on a 55 Disco 3 SE with an auto gearbox and love it to death (although i still use my old 300 for going anywhere too mucky!)

HOWEVER, having had the D3 for only a couple of weeks, i have started to experience problems with the auto gearbox - it has become progressively more frequent and coincides with a loss of the engine temp gauge on the dash. the symptoms seem to be that the engine 'hunts', causing the gearbox to cycle through gears as if you were kicking down the box for an overtake - the result has been that on two occasions I have had a fault come up on the info panel that i have a 'Transmission fault - limited gears available' and 'special programs unavailable'!!! Big Cry

i have booked it in for a test on a dealers autologic next week, but does anyone know what is happening?!?! I’m not too worried as it is covered by a warranty for the next 10 months, but obviously would like to get it sorted ASAP...

thanks for any help in advance

Mat

I have recently had a Transmission Fault warning light on my 06 model at 85,000 miles
This was accompanied by complete loss of drive. This proggresiveley got worse after long high speed journeys.
After consultation with a local independant LR specialist it was decided to drop the Transmission oil .
The oil was badly burnt. once oil and filter were replaced everything is back to normal.
LR stated that the transmission oil need not be replaced until 150,000 miles but it might be worth considering after our experience.
Hope that helps

Fenris dont let them change the gearbox, Just wait till Sunday I will report back to you, I was on here with the same question a month back,. My temp gauge drops down the car gets hot inside , the gearbox changes are erratic, the car when put in neutral revs up and down if you touch accelerator. They say they have found the fault it is the Oil pressure sensor which I think goes to earth, they have got the car til Friday but they say they have not had problems since they replaced the sensor on Tuesday. I will keep you informed. Hopefully we can find why we have the same problems Confused

Here is the full story !

The technician said that it is the oil temperature sensor at the bottom of the engine. It is a hard wired sensor so does not go through the fault diagnostics. When the oil sensor is not working it is either hot/cold it immediatly tries to go to the lowest gear but the engine tries to keep the revs up so it searches on the torque converter. The fault will come up for the gearbox because it can't find the correct gear. The airconditioner is switched off because it thinks the car is not at operating temp so it thinks the car is cold. The designers did not anticipate so many problems from one sensor that does not register a fault.

Eetamagog,

you are a star! the garage found the lose wire and one simple fix later (£98 instead of a £4000 gearbox as the main dealer suggested) and the car is fixed.

if i ever meet you the first rounds on me!

cheers

Mat
