Transfer Case Fluid and Automatic Transmission Fluid on LR3 |
|
I am a complete amateur but are these 2 different fluids or the same? I just had my transmission fluid changed to a synthetic ATF one a complete flush was 9.5 litres. Also had the front and rear differential fluids changed 75w-90. Do I need to get my transfer case fluid changed also? Land Rover LR3 SE v4.0

The diffs and transfer case use the same oil 75w90 for all 4 liters is enough for complete oil change.

Full synthetic
SAE 75w90
GL-5
However the following oils may also be used:
Castrol EPX 80W90 GL-5
Caltex Thuban GL5 EP 80W90 GL-5
Shell Spirax ASX (Synthetic based) 75W90 GL-5
Habot (Full synthetic) 80W90 GL-5
The ideal oil for the transfer case as far as I am concerned is Castrol SAF-XO. The specifications are as follows:
Castrol SAF-XO (Full Synthetic) 75W90 GL-5
In the Pretoria region you can order this oil from Oom Jan or Emiel at Midas in Centurion.
DIFFERENTIALS
If all of the above regarding gear oils are taken into account the ideal oil for the differentials should meet with the following criteria:
Full synthetic
SAE 75W90
GL-5
The same oils for the transfer case with service category GL-5 can be used in the differentials:
Castrol EPX 80W90 GL-5
Caltex Thuban GL5 EP 80W90 GL-5
Shell Spirax ASX (Synthetic based) 75W90 GL-5
Habot oil (Full synthetic) 80W90 GL-5
Castrol recommends that Castrol SAF-XO be used in the differentials. The Workshop Manual from Land Rover prescribes a GL-5 oil with viscosity 90. I also recommend that Castrol SAF-XO be used. I have full specifications on SAF-XO if you would like to get hold of it. Castrol SAF-XO is very expensive. If you frequently use your Land Rover in mud or water where the possibility of water ingress into the differentials is high, it would be wise to use Shell Spirax to cut down on costs.

The transfer case have an special oil.
Is not a diff oil like 75W90 GL5. it don't have strong smell and is much much thinner than gear oil (i had smell and touched it between my fingers)
The RP doc lists it as SHELL TF0753 and says = OEM fluid. so, special oil (no SAF XO), visit to dealers.
There was a list of oils from LR a couple of years ago that we here in Spain detected as wrong listed, matter of a print error, code changed and because of that, the SAF XO was prescribed to the transfer, we here know of many D3 with the wrong fluid changed. maybe this same list is the cause of confusion. (we know too that the wrong list is used yet in many places... )
The special transfer fluid (only for LR...so expensive) is the only fluid that the transfer must get into.
So:
Front diff: Castrol SAF XO
Rear diff:
- Open: Castrol SAF XO
- Electronic: Castrol SAF Carbon Mod Plus (AKA "BOT 720" now)
Transfer: Shell TF0753 (AKA "Special transfer oil")

I too thought you had to use a special oil (LR dealer only) in the transfer case ????
feel uncomfortable questioning the mighty Flack though

me too...be sure but as I was the first here that detected the wrong listed LR reference and turn on the caution alarm about it, I'm sure of what I say in this matter.
