My brothers mate is an oil dealer and these are the recommended/equivalents as long as it fully synthetic and no lower than 75w 90 then its fine for Diffs and transfer box .

Ye turns out flack is right. I'm at the oil change shop and they looked up and amsoil 75w-90 fully synthetic meets the shell tf0753 specs. and also found they put 75w-140 in the rear diff cos its a heavier oil so better for towing etc. tommorrow getting front wheel bearings done and disc brakes/pads all round also changing to summer tyres. can't wait.Land Rover LR3 SE v4.0
Matte Black Wrapped with Chrome Edging, Front Grille, Aftermarket Reversing Camera, Aftermarket Parking Sensors, Curt Class III Hitch,
£18.99 inc vat isn't that bad.
Does Opie do it?
According to the Ravenol guy at Malvern 4x4 last weekend, the Magna Steyr box does need an approved oil to keep it working.
The question is why do Jaguar Land Rover specify a specific oil - Shell TF 0753 when a fully synthetic 75W-90 would do?
There must be something in the make up of the oil that makes it special surely?
Ravenol is German , Magna Steyr is Austrian, close enough me thinks!

A lot of guys have used manual transmission oil in the transfer without issue I believe.
I bought the Ravenol stuff for mine - it certainly is thinner than standard gear oil - its smell, colour and consistency is actually a lot more like ZF LG6 that is used in the auto trans, but it is slightly thicker than that.
For the actual mechanical workings of the box I assume gear oil would be ok, but remember the limited slip part of the box uses a clutch pack like an auto trans - so like an auto trans, that clutch pack may not operate correctly with a different grade of oil being used.2008 RRS TDV6 - Chawton White/Black/Lined Oak - 20's, h/k, sunroof - 350K KM.

I know this is a few months old but I'm just looking at doing the transfer box after doing the gearbox and diffs at the weekend. I've come across the following info in my searching.
This would tie in with the previous posts suggesting the same oil can be used in the Transfer case as used in the diffs ie a good quality synth 75W90.
I've also read a couple of references on my travels to Merc ML320's and BMW X5s using Magna Steyr Active Transfer Boxes too and they have changed their recomended fluids from being originally TF0753 to a full synth 75W90 option also.
So for me this is sufficient to suggest that the LR "Special" oil is actually Snake Oil
Obviously you make up your own minds, I just thought I'd share

Preparing to undertake the 150k/10 year Service - So thankful I stumbled across this thread!
After much deliberation, confusion and increase of grey hairs; following the knowledge and advice of you fine chaps, I shall be replacing the Gearbox, F & R Diffs and Transfer Case oils with a suitable Fully Synth 75W-90 Oil
If I've misinterpreted anything, for the love of Jeebus throw a blunt heavy object at me before it's too late
Updates to follow - Wish me luck!"Buy a Land Rover" they said ...
"It'll be fun!" they said.

I used in a few months ago the following and did quite a lot of research on this and other forums, read specifications, etc.
- fully synthetic hypoid 75W-90 for front and rear diffs
- Ravenol TF-0870 for transfer case
- BG 312E Universal ATF for the automated transmission
Regarding your gearbox, since it is manual, I don’t claim to have any knowledge

I did all mine a while ago, and looked at all the options.
I found that the Ravenol was £21 ish delivered, and the LR "Special" transfer box oil was the same price (collected) so I went with the OEM.
The savings to use non OEM diff/transfer oils was not enough for me to be worrying!

As you’re UK based it probably makes sense to buy locally rather than ordering from Finland ... try AF, they stock pretty much everything you might want.. I got mine from a “full service lubricant house“ chain (oilpoint) here.

As the transfer box is a little electromechanical wonder made in Graz, Austria, it would appear it needs some sort of fluid that mathes the mechancal spec of the interior workings and maybe some other, not so obvious specs. Unfortunately, although i have some connections into the factory, i could not yet elicit a full spec from Magna.
However, i can safely assure all of you guys, that filling the wrong fluid keeps the bread on the table for a handful of styrian specialists, Magna make quite a living of refurbishing and repairing those units...
Ravenol have a special Fluid for those transfer boxes. Same goes for the auto box. Auto box oil you will also get from ZF.
I have contacted and searched a couple of german oil manufacturers regarding the oils, but only 1 replied honestly "we don't have" and only Ravenol have made something special for those cases. Most use the same "joint" database system through the interwebz, and the system's data on our Disco 3&4 seems to be very "condensed"...
The transfer oil is quite different from the diff oil. And the ATF is yet another thing. As is the servo oil. (i bought R., you guessed it)
I'd make sure the Land Rover Spec is written somewhere on the tin at least. If not, your choice, eh? I didn#t want to rely on what's being said by your uncle's brother's most beloved retired tractor mechanc, and certainly did not blindly follow some advice the guy looked up on the desktop pc at my local parts dealers, when there's nothing in written on the tin. neither the guy at the counter nor the "uncle's mechanic" will foot the bill for a ruined transfer box!
