Booked in for Wednesday so I'll let you know. Does seem a bit OTT to have to remove the box, especially as the flange seems quite accessible. With only 1.5 ltrs of lube in there, and 2 drips an hour, it won't take long to empty it so I'm keen to get it done.

Finally got the car back from the workshop last week after 3 days in there. They initially thought the seal could be replaced without removing the box, but it turned out that to replace the front output flange seal the whole transfer box has to be removed, and the box split to get the shaft and seal out Rolling Eyes . They changed the input shaft seal at the same time, so the total time it took was 6 hours! Fortunately they did it at a reduced labour rate, as this was the 1st time they had done the job - I dread to think what it would have cost at main dealer hourly rates Shocked . It seems very few LR main dealers have done the job yet - so this was probably the first independent to do the job. I used Landrovers4U in Honiton Thumbs Up

From the look of the offending seal, it seemed to have grit in it which I suspect was from wading in deep muddy water Whistle

yes RM recently but under extended warranty I'm afraid Sad it's a transfer box out and then replacement of the oil seal, so a reasonable job, the seal and replacement flange come as a kit it's not worth just replacing the oil seal by itself. I thinkit was the thick end of 500 notes to do Shocked at the main dealers but I'm sure a specialist independant has to be cheaper? You can't leave it though as the oil is [as the techie said] "as thin as p155", so would leave it's prison in short order Sad
