Trailers with LED taillights |
|
I recently purchased a teardrop trailer with normal running lights and LED tail lights which are running, signal, 4way and brake. When I plug the 7 pin, and turn the lights on in the LR3, the tail lights seems to flash intermittently. The signal, 4 way and brake all work at full brightness but even if the left turn signal is flashing, the right side is still flickering. I know when some convert their D3 tail lights to D4 style, they need to add a resistor. Is it possible I need to do this with the trailer lights too.

Not sure but have seen quite a few funny effects from caravans being towed by disco's when the caravan has led's as you say though you probably do need to put in resistors to compensate the power Discovery 3 se gone

I have sorted this problem.
Adding the resistors will only allow the car to detect the presence of the trailer by simulating the load of a 21 watt indicator bulb. (use 6.8 ohm, 50 watt power resistors). The resistors will not stop the strobing effect on the lights. For this you need to use a bypass relay.
I installed a bypass relay and fitted double pole switch in the indicator inputs which when switched on will drop in the resistors to ground.
So when towing you now have to flick the switch on in the boot.
My boat uses LED submersible lighting and this works great.
