Towing lorries up the A56 this morning!

It snowed a little bit here overnight, and the A56 accy bypass was a little bit bad... So we helped out a little by getting the lorries off the main carriegeway. MTR tyres worked a treat.. At one point we where the only vehicles moving, with a 30 ton truck on the back(no idea really how much they weigh), and its quite a steep hill. Disco3, still giving the permagrin! Very Happy Cairns Blue

I stand to be corrected but up to 44 tonnes in the UK AFAIK.

Wiggs, I don't think you can get enough grip to break a 6 tonne strop when in good condition. As long as you don't try to snatch it free.

Sorry, forgot to mention that, you're right of course.

Also have to agree with Roel. You can do a lot with that rope if you don't force it. It's horizontal movement so you are not pulling all the vehicle weight, you 'just' have to overcome the horizontal resistance.

WIggs. A Chalenger 2 weighs 70T ish but only has a rolling resistence ofabout 5T on flat tarmac/concrete. So an artic should be no big deal for a D3 Thumbs Up

I am pretty sure the friction coefficient of a lorry on sheet ice is pretty low... can't see a 6T load?!

Just don't look at the insurance position of towing people, or it may put you off!

As with all recoveries, it's not the mass but the rolling resistance that puts the load on your recovery gear, there's a very complex formula to calculate approximate load but basically on a slope of less than 10 degrees, on a firm surface 10 tonnes gives a rolling resistance of approximately 5.6 tonnes, at a 5 degree slope this is 4.8 tonnes and at 2 degrees, 4.3 tonnes, obviously the application of the pulling force can increase these due to shock loading
