Towing Disappointment in a D4

Woke up this morning to discover that my neighbour's son had skidded on ice on his drive (both our houses sit atop a small rise and have steep drives) and had managed to wedge his car at 90 degrees to the direction of the drive.

I helped neighbour to put some grit down on the monoblock apron in front of her house and rushed to the Disco to get my tow rope (never used) so that I could pull the car straight and let it drive up to the house....only to find that the son's car had no towing hook.

It's a small Seat or similar.

Very disappointed. Almost as much as I am when some joker puts a 'Flood' warning triangle out for a damp road.

Surely there would be a screw in eye in the tool kit on a Seat. My Skoda has one . Had the same issue on Sunday, offered to tow a BMW out of a car park, no towing eye in the kit, but had the threaded receiver in the front & rear bumper.

Towing eye is usually with the spare wheel.

Those towing eyes are just for that, I'd be wary of causing any damage pulling those things in anything other than directly straight.

Don't know enough about it, sorry. I was expecting the same towing ring that I've got on the D4 from when I've been towed up-hill and out of mud.

Rolling with laughter

I’m always a bit disappointed when we go camping or to a festival and the car park is all dry and grippy. Having said that, I haven’t experienced the green ice yet so maybe I should count myself lucky.

whilst the towing eye may well be better when pulled in-line with the car you should also be thinking:

1. your choice is limited
2. given the icy surface, it should present much lower loads/stress on the mounting point than normal.

Put the front and rear windows down, rope around the B pillar and job's a good un. Assuming drive is wide enough. Whistle

@DSL Wouldn't you need to use the A or the C pillar in order to pivot the car? You should have suggested this Scotty to see their reaction!

All cars have to have towing eyes but for cosmetic reasons they are now hidden behind small panels in the bumpers with a screw in eye - perfectly fine for this sort of recovery.

Getting the little panels off to reveal the eye is PITA though and often very tricky to do without leaving a mark in the painted/coloured bumpers.

Well, at work now. Helped to spread some grit around but not knowledgeable enough to try anything with the vehicle.

Her husband will be back from a business trip today. I think he knows as much about cars as me, but if it's still there when I get home, he and I can look it it and shrug our shoulders together before getting the AA out.

If it's got alloy wheels, a soft rope through the spokes might be enough to pull it around enough to roll it away.
