I understood that the ONLY thing modified by enabling the D3 for tow hook functionality is that when a trailer is plugged in it disables the automatic raising of the suspension when certain TR modes are requested whilst in low range. (as per what Gareth said)
I find that the gearbox behaves perfectly when towing my little tiddler of a RIB (6m), although I do usually leave it in sport when off the motorways just to keep the low gears a bit longer.
You can notice the extra weight a bit when starting off, but once moving it's as if it wasn't there. 2006 Discovery 3 TDV6 SE Auto Buckingham Blue

I'm intrigued by this as I have a trailer board that goes on the tow bracket fixed bike carrier. As the bike carrier is hardly going to have as much effect as hooking up a big trailer I wouldn't particularly want any changes to the vehicle. I must look into this further.
