I just had my hols in France with the caravan (Swift Challenger). I have an AL-Ko hitch and with the D3 pulling it was fantasatic, easy towing, perfect stability not a single wobble or issue.
I do agree with slinger the AL-Ko anti theft mechanism can be a pain to get on and off it takes a bit of wiggling to get it lined up right but thats a minor issue as far as I'm concerned.
I have towed many things with many motors but to date the D3 has been the best I've used, it just gets on with it. I use low range on hill starts or long slow driving such as queues to look after the gearbox, mines a manual and a joy to tow with

Towed my caraven today from York over to The Lakes
Down all the narrow twisty bits to Coniston.
Towed like a dream.
BUT ........ I'm back home tonight, though Caravan & swmbo are still in Coniston.
She only went and left the PC on didn't she
Couldn't take the risk if after a week the thing decides to go up in flames.
Ah well .... back over tomorrow ...... always on the road less travelled 🚧
< ‘tis but a mere scratch …….. it’ll polish out.

I have to fully agree with posts ref the towing ability, compared to my old TD5, my conqueror sits there quite happily, and the buffeting caused by "white vans" and "people carriers" overtaking does not cause anything like the drag previously encountered, I do think that a "fixed towbar" would be preferable to the removable swan neck as I'm sure that there is a very slight ammount of "play" in the way it fixes (checked by dealer and found to be "normal") that with a caravan behind can be felt just a little. Looking forward to pulling the old "shed on wheels" down to the south of france in august!! I've had vans with both the winterhoff and now the alko hitches and to be honest I prefer the winterhoff version, the alko seems to wear the friction pads out quicker and I sometimes have problems getting the alko to release. Maybe us "road blockers" should get together for a caravan meet up one weekend somewhere? My caravans easy to spot - its the white one

The AL-Ko hitch lock can be a bit fiddly to get on and off, but it can be resolved totally , the reason it sticks is because it binds on the towing hitch, and 5 minutes spent with a small file to take of the burrs and tight bits on the inside of the pressing, is problem solved.

I find that putting a few psi more in the rears makes a difference when towing, upto the loaded value (cant remeber the value)
Ive never had an issue with the ALKO hitch and the detatchable towbar.
Curiously, what MPG do people get when towing ?? I get approx 21-22mpg on the computer. Got our Disco... Love it.....

your wallet will tell you something very different
I've almost started using my AMEX statement instead of the fuel guage.

I only got my D3 a couple of weeks ago and I've just spent a week down in Dorset with my twin axle Sterling. It towed like a dream with 6 people in the car and my average MPG according to the computer was 22mpg. My partner normally drives a mini and seeing her fall out of the passenger door on numerous occasions was the cause of much amusement for me and the kids
She has requested sidesteps as a result - any recommendations out there?

SECOND TIME TOWING IN FRANCE |
|
Hi my send post, just say I am off to France on Saturday for three weeks with my Fent Platin 700. It make a large unit, but the disco makes easy work of it. Not too sure how I will cope, with my new hip replacement Travel with my good lady and two dogs. Will try to post regular over the next couple of weeks, to let you know how we get on.
