About to order new D4, dealer has offered tow pack for £510 fitted.
Don't really have a need for one at the moment but are they expensive to have fitted later ?
Dealer said they are £200 more expensive if not factory ordered ...... true ?

you can pick up the towbar for around £150 on ebay ...it just slots into a hole thats in the rear of the D4
electrics are about £90 new and take and hour to fit ...all plug and play
then get it enabled at the dealer ...or someone with a faultmate ...dealer would proberly charge around £60 G4 Gone ...but not forgotten

I was quoted £586 inclusive (tow bar, electrics, activated, VAT) this week by LR dealer on my 9 month old D4.
But if I was buying new I would haggle for the dealer to throw it in for free - always worked in the past.
If they say no, try and meet them some way by offering to pay for the labour for installing the electrics, for example, (but let them include the electrics for free!)

Well, best get what you want/ need. What is your spec?
£586 is from a LR dealer who I didn't even buy my D4 from. So it's not as if I was getting a loyalty discount.
So if you needed a towbar in the future, you should still be able get it for a lot cheaper than the £700-ish indicated; more-so if you went the ebay route. I'd leave it until needed.

Just look at the options that your £500+ would buy and factory fit the bits that would be difficult/ significantly more expensive to retro-fit.
Towbars are relatively simple to fit when you need them.
I know folk who have balked at the heating steering wheel as being unneccessary; but I know folk who have them and love them in the winter.
Ach, go for it

I've got an unused towbar for sale, check the for sale section, like Wiggs states the electrics are relatively cheap and an easy fit, personnaly I would do it yourself, the total job would cost less than £300 If it ain't broke... Take it apart anyway, how else you gonna find out how it works

I bought the Tow equipe detachable height adjustable model of e bay with dedicated electics for a shade
over £300 inc delevery
Easy to fit ( apart from the chassis inserts which were slightly too long and needed filing down)
Electics plugged in and worked without enabling
and its alot neater and less of a plough the Land rover standard adjustable towbar
Cheers

Personally having paid the best part £50K for our D4 another £500 was worth it for the peace of mind factor - should anything go wrong with it then you have the upper hand - 'It was factory fitted' - OK we tow a caravan and needed it immediately BUT sorry to save a few quid ? NO THANKS. LR Discovery 4 XS pulling an Airstream 532 Caravan also own (since new) a 1996 MGF

Well, the towhook style isn't exactly hard to install...after all its designed to be detachable so you would expect there to be little or no labour charge on that part.
As most have said electrics are plug and play with OE looms available for around £100.
I fitted my D3 fixed/adjustable towbar and electrics in about 1.5hrs, the biggest issue was getting large hands in to clip the loom into the holes on the rear chassis/bumper bar.
I got my detachable towbar from ebay for £90...on delivery it appears to have been unused as the paint on both ball and "wedge" part are unscathed. The OE (VPLAT0011) electrics I got at a bargain £28 as they were missing the 13-7 pin adaptor mounting plate which turned out to be an 80p part from the dealer. Total tow-pack expenditure £118, the electrics will take about an hour to fit and hopefully a nice chat to the dealer will get them enabled FOC.
All parts are genuine landrover so shouldn't create any warranty issues.
My towbar has actually cost less than my mudflaps!

I agree with Ted - life's too short to be fiddling about underneath a £50K motor. You could probably save £200 on the DIY route, but who do you phone if it doesn't work . MY12 D4 HSE Ipanema Sand

Its not always about the money you save... Its about the achievment of completing something different, if youre like me i like to fit and fix things myself, and the sense of satisfaction from a job well done, i'm not one of thrm people who buy a car and only drive it, i want to work on it and understand how it works..... It must be easier than trying to understand how a woman works.
Its a land rover.... Is this not one of the reasons for buying one? If it ain't broke... Take it apart anyway, how else you gonna find out how it works
