Gear selector very stiff

Over the past few months my gear selector has become stiff to the point where it hasn't selected drive a couple of times. I've just logged a call to LR Assist but my question is how hard is it to replace or grease the selector mechanism under the car? I've had the interior trim off and the problem is definitely further down than there.

Dead easy. Undo enough fasteners to pry it open a bit and squirt in the spray grease.

So is this a problem that you cannot get on the newer dial gear selector? Or is the underneath mechanics of it basically the same? It would be good to know that a few problems are eliminated as time passes (although I have to admit I prefer the all time classic stick Embarassed - and don't start now guys!)
