Rear lower wishbone reinstall problem |
|
Hi there,
Have just replaced the bushes on the rear lower wishbones both sides, not the easiest job to get them out & new ones back in, but managed in the end.
Now trying to put the wishbones back in and struggling to get the air suspension lined up and back in, seems to have move outwards and down and now amount of persuasion seems to get it back in(tried to jack it up but to no avail).
My questions are; Is there a set order to line the bushes up and get the bolts back in (ie front first, then rear, then lower one then long bolt thru air suspension) ?
Second do I need to release the pressure out the air suspension (little box on lh side with supply and two returns which need slightly undone)?
Thirdly any other useful tips to get it back together you might have are always welcome.
Many thanks in advance, greetings
Johan

When I recently had my rear uppers changed, we had to use a long persuading bar to get bolts back in and it did take a fair bit of persuading

It helps massively if you unbolt the rear track arm from the hub.
Hook the chassis end in first, then pull the hub out and attach there. The arm will be supported at both ends, which gives you something to lever against to line up the lower strut bush to arm My D3 Build Thread

Thanks for the replies, will unbolt the rear track arm and try to get it back together that way.
Disco_Mickey, that's the way I did it as well; the chassis side first because of the little lip (wonder why that is needed here) on the rear chassis side making almost impossible doing it the other way around.
On getting the bushes out, unless you have a special tool for it (not sure if it would work, never seen one) I found the easiest way way to use an oxy- acetylene torch and burn them out and when still hot chisel out the outer sleeves. Tried to use an hydraulic press but chickened out at 5 ton of pressure just in case the wishbone deformed. To get the new bushes in you can use the press and I found it started moving at about 4 ton pressure and use plenty of fairy liquid to help it slide.
Hopefully I'll get it all back together this morning, thank again for he guidance much appreciated!
BTW would it be advisable to have a wheel alignment done after this work or should it not be necessary?

Hi all,
Managed to get it all together again with a little more persuading but also "bleeding" the air out of the air suspension. Didn’t want to undo the rear track arm if I could help it because I’m not sure I wouldn’t have snapped of the bolts the way it was all corroded but can see how that would make it easier to do.
Thanks again for the all helpful tips and also “the Large One†for advising & sending us all the required parts!
Ps Can’t wait to try some of your Devils’ Delight Nick, please let us know when you have a new batch.
