my wifes car needs new rear pads according to the dash. there is a light grating noise when braking too so its entirely possible that the discs will need replacing also.when they are changed will the rear brake/handbrake need to be recaliberated or reset on a diagnostic computer as has been suggested to me by someone whose opinion i value? Ideally, the EPB should be put into "mount" position when doing rears discs/pads. However, it is not necessary every time. In fact, I have never done it... My D3 Build Thread

Check the levers on the EPB shoes are not seized. If they are, the cables will have wound to far into the module, and the adjustment on the EPB may be incorrect, and cause you issues.
If they are seized, the shoes need taken off, and the cables extended out. This is what the mount position does
If the warning light is on, the sensor needs changed My D3 Build Thread

Yes you can. There are two sensors, one at the front left and one at the rear right.
Instructions to setup the epb shoes are in the brake bible if your guy isn't familiar with them. Bodsys Brake Bible
