Towing electrics question |
|
I have been quoted around £130 from LR main dealers for the supply of a twin electric ('n' & 's') wiring loom for a Disco 3 and the same amount again for fitting it.
I have also been told that once fitted, the car needs to be plugged into a diagnostic machine to be 'programmed' and that this 'needs' to be done. It is extremely doubtful, they said, that a mobile tow bar fitter (even if affiliated to one of the largest and most respected tow-bar companies in the world) would have the diagnostic capability to correctly install the tow-bar.
Nobody could/would tell me what was so important about this programming phase until one person at an LR dealership suggested that it was to do with the vehicle recognising that a trailer had been attached (only if the electrical cables had been attached to the socket though)! and it would turn off the rear pdc automatically as it would sense the presence of a trailer.
If that is the only reason, could you not just turn pdc off in the first instance until you have arrived on site and unhitched? (I assume that pdc is selectable)?
Also, is the detachable LR towbar Alko compatible as I believe that you have to order an Alko suitable tow ball if you elect for the multi-height tow-bar?
Finally, whichever I choose, I assume that I will need to wire brush off the black finish to the ball before use?
Many thanks

The park sensors will turn off and the electrics will work with no enablement .
All the enablement does is stop the car from raising / lowering automatically when you select the terrain knob ... You can still raise / lowe it manually
Fitting the proper LR electrics is very easy to do .. It's all plug and play G4 Gone ...but not forgotten

sorry, lost me slightly re: 'enablement'. Is that the same as being 'programmed'?
You mention that the enablement prevents the vehicle from raising/lowering if terrain response is selected. Would the same be true if low ratio is selected eg for slow reversing?
Bear with me on this one as I have not picked the car up yet! It's all new to me and we're off on our hols in two weeks time!

Yep. All true. I've done this, £130 for fitting is a rip off. It took me 40 minutes, including some swearing (instruction 16 I think it was) and a cuppa.
Forum member geoff. with a dot did the enabling for £25 but I've noticed nothing different before or since. It just worked. ____
