was being followed by a friend the other day in the D3. When we stopped he said both side brake lights were out and only the top light was working!! - not a single warning light on the dash!!!! is this normal ?????
replaced both (using the sidelights!!! which are the right twin filament bulbs - good having some warm standbys)- - no obvious fault.
Any pointers???
should i have had a warning light come up on the dash?
cheers

Sadly, despite relieving us of between £30k and £45k for our motors, LR didn't think to include a bulb warning system. A bit of an oversight given that Ford have been fitting these to their cars since the early 1990s......
Edit: May be worth fitting Luxeon LED bulbs instead? They light up far quicker than filament bulbs (which is why you may notice high-level lamps coming on fractionally ahead of the side ones) and have a much longer life than filament bulbs. I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

so where do you get these luxeon bulbs from, as I've gone through 3 brake light bulbs in the space of a few months.
and....wont the issue being talked about in the LED trailer lights topic be an issue? http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic9717.html

10 pages of it!
In a nutshell, ultraled sell a range of suitable LEDs. The trailer light system doesn't apply to the onboard lights so no problem there.
EDIT:
CAN NO LONGER RECOMMEND ULTRALEDS DUE TO POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

If you're going through bulbs that quickly, you need to get the regulator on the alternator looked at quickly. You don't want to risk frying anything else if the regulator isn't working properly

Al
Al, I had a series of bulb failures on another car. Problem turned out to be the bulbs themselves. Inspection of where the filament was trapped into the suspending arms showed it was badly crimped on one side. The heat/cool cycle quickly opened this crimp up until it let go of the filament. Would last anything from 6 days to 6 months before giving up the ghost.
I gave up getting cheap (actually IMHO expensive for what they were) Halfords bulbs and went for proper Bosch ones instead - problem sorted and cheaper in the long run as I never replaced them again.
Just another possibility if your alternator regulator checks out OK.
Edit : NoDo$h, I agree. My Volvo tracked every single external light on the car. Was a bit wierd when an indicator bulb went though, as information display would cycle between being blank and "Left Indicator Bulb Failure" with the blinking Dr. Ian Malcolm:
"Yeah, but your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should."
Transgenic tomato anyone?
