Remove the heavy duty tow bar? |
|
I have a 2011 Discovery 4 with a heavy duty tow hitch. We tow a 2-tonne twin-axle caravan for 2 or 3 holidays per year.
I'm considering a bit of offroading and am concerned by the poor departure angle created by the HD hitch. The hitch seems to be built around a removable one. Can I remove the heavy duty part of the hitch? If so, will it be solid enough for the heavy van?
Thanks in advance,
Nick

Personally I would not do this.
If you want to go that route, completely take the heavy duty towbar off
And buy a removable one instead

Having a quick look at mine I'd say you could certainly strip off the extra supports to leave the removable bit but no idea what it's rated at. Guess it'll be in the book somewhere

the stabilising bars can be loosened and then the tow bar removed. It only takes 5 minutes, so better to just undo the bolts that attach to the tow bar, remove the tow bar, then just pull the stabiliser bars upwards and cable tie them together until you are ready to refit the tow bar
I often leave mine cable tied up when I fit the swan next removeable bar.
I wouldn't tow with the adjustable tow bar with the stabilisers removed unless I had the tow ball on the highest point, but even then if you had an accident you may have problems as the tow bar is recommended to be used that way Duncan
