Skinny spare to full size?
I've got what I understand to be the standard skinny spare wheel with my D4. However, as I occasionally tow long distances and take trips abroad, I would be happier to have a full size spare wheel without the speed / distance / towing restrictions of the skinny article. Would I be correct iin thinking that a full size spare wheel and tyre will fit in the unmodified under body tray / holder?
Assuming that one will fit, I take it that LR will want an arm and a leg for a spare 20" wheel. Are there any other options - e.g. steel wheels, aftermarket suppliers, well-known auction sites etc?

Wow! Thanks for the very fast replies - much appreciated!
Do I take it that a spare wheel protector is some kind of lock and that it's available at my local stealer?

PM Uncle Ray (site sponsor RLD) - he manufactures the spare wheel protector. I've got one on my D3 & there's no way anyone could cut the winch cable & take my spare now

Don't get a posh 20" for a spare as the underneath is a demanding environment and tyres are more expensive - but remember:
19" wheels fit all D3s and D4s.
18" wheels fit all D3s but very few D4s.
17" wheels only fit D3s with small brakes.
I used a 19" spare on my D3 so that I could use it on a future D4 purchase - it now sits under my D4.Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948
I might even have a 20" wheel to go with it - pm me if interested.MY2022 D5 HSE D300 - with extra nice bits added

Just been through the same experience myself.
I replaced the skinny spare with this one.......
The tyre is a 19" but fits the wheel-well a treat and runs smoothly when used as a spare with my 20" wheels already on the car.
The tyre that I got was a Pirelli scorpion (with 6mm tread) and so a great match for the standard tyres
So overall, £140 for a wheel & tyre is a Bargain IMHO - G od Luck2000 D2 TD5 - big red tractor no longer with us
2006 D3 - no longer with us and sadly missed
2010 D4 alas no more, but a lovely colour (Nara)

Just a quick update and a thank you for all the helpful replies to my question regarding replacing the space-saver spare wheel.
I now have a full-size spare wheel and tyre installed, along with the RLD spare wheel protector as recommended. Thanks to JonM for the spare wheel and to Ray at RLD for organising the spare wheel protector so quickly - it was in the post before I had got around to sending the payment!

Is that right?
Can you run different size wheels on the same axle due to the fact they will have a different rolling radius and the diff won't like it as it will constantly try to compensate as it would think you are turning a corner.
Surely you must need to have the same size wheel and tyre all round.
Also the wheel speed sensors wouldn't like it for to long they? Or is that how you can have different sizes as the sensors and computer will work it out for you.
Could someone explain this properly to me (us) or whoever is interested.
Many thanks, guy.D3 bonatti grey

Alan's very good, he has dark and light ones coming in all the time. I bought 4 of these from him, some are spare 50mph rated and some are rated for full-time use. Looks like he sells with and without rubber...!Discovery 3 Manual as PDF | Blackvue 500 | BAS Remap | Mates did South America in a Landie
