Automatic gear box flushing in the southwest |
|
Hi, After many months of expense and being told by my main dealer in Truro that I needed a new gearbox I was on the point of travelling up to the people that do the Megaflush as recommended many times on this forum. However this meant a day out of work and the cost of the long journey. Then a friend told me about Jerry Harvey Engineering near Penzance, they do general servicing and build bespoke Defenders. I dually contacted them and was pleased to learn that they do indeed have the transmission flushing machine and could carry out the flush any week day morning or afternoon. I booked the car in and on the 28 mile drive down to Trewellard near Penzance the gearbox felt more juddery and unrefined at each roundabout or incline. On my arrival I was talked through the flushing process and shown the machine, We had a quick look around the other project vehicles being built and then went off in the courtesy car to nearby St Ives for lunch. The car was waiting in the car park, road tested and washed on our return, I was shown a sample of the contaminated fluid flushed out that was dirty and discoloured (this was after the main dealer had already changed the fluid and filter twice and replaced the radiator). Jerry at Trewellard had also cleared all fault codes and checked if any software updates were needed using th Autologic tester. On leaving Harvey's Engineering there is a reasonably steep incline the ideal test for transmission problems. Needless to say the car performed without fault, and for the last 3.5k miles felt so much smoother then it ever did in the past. We will be returning to Trewellard in the near future to have a performance tune remap carried out I will let you know how it turns out.

The car was juddering under load, it was very slight to start with and progressively became worse to the point that we did not want to drive any distance. The mileage was 43670 when the fault first became apparent, the dealer tried a new radiator and double fluid change at 46415. A new gearbox was suggested as the only cure at 47090 and the Jerry Harvey flush was carried out at 48674 the car has now covered 55417 with no further problems. The cost for the flush is £226 plus VAT this includes 15 litres of new Shell M1375, a pre flush cleaner and a post flush additive. Jerry also reset's the gearbox adaptions and clears any faults logged. The gearbox response and change qaulity feels better than ever, having spoken to Jerry since the repair he suggested that the additives and updated software are responsible for this. The car is booked in for the engine tune remap next Tuesday which costs £140 plus VAT which seems quite reasonable.

Just a quick update on the Megaflush carried out at Jerry Harvey Engineering at Penzance, the car has driven faultlessly and several D3 and D4 owning friends who have driven my car were so impresssed that they have been to Jerry for the flush and updated software. I returned for the engine power upgrade which cost a very reasonable £150 + VAT this as really improved low end torque and so far given a noticeable improvement in fuel economy despite me driving everywhere faster.

Thought I might chime in on this. I also had the dreaded judders and was scouring this fine forum for answers. Saw this post and it sounded similar (05D3 with 113k) so went to see Jerry to have the mega flush (and engine remap at the same time). Seems to have sorted it so very pleased. Remap has definitely given the D3 a bit of extra zip for same (maybe better?) fuel economy. I would highly recommend the flush and Jerry Harvey nr Penzance.

We need somebody with a megaflush type system on the central South Coast.
Any ideas anyone?

Jerry Harvey Engineering sound pretty fab.
I'm in the Midlands and am looking for similar here. I don't have any issues but at 103k miles, I'm wanting it done ASAP. Would also like the engine remap.

My Experience of Jerry Harvey's - Penzance! |
|
Hi all, just thought I'd post up my experience of a MegaFlush (& remap) @ Jerry Harvey's - that I had done - largely as the result of reading this thread! Thanks for your experience "Landrover90v8" - sincerely appreciated, it was a great help!
My transmission was always fine though the vehicle had just had a major (main dealer) Service, F&R belts change, 4 new sets of pads & discs and a few other bits & pieces as well. Its a well-cared-for 58 plate HSE (Oct 10 reg) and I wanted to maintain that ideal moving forward.
Prior to the work; the transmission had not shown any issues whatsoever and of course changed gears up and down at high and low revs perfectly smoothly / normally, with no hints of shudder or any other non-favourable characteristic! But, I was aware that the vehicle had done 103k miles - so, with that nagging at the back of my mind, really wanted that fluid replacing and as much of it as possible!
Given the quote's I'd had from the other 2-3 dealers (that perform Mega-Flushes) plus I wanted a remap and a recommendation; I went for Jerry Harvey to do the work (especially as in 2 of the 3 other quotes I'd had, involved an extensive drive there anyway). I'd also given them a ring in advance and spoke to Lindsey - very nice chap, new the D3 (& other LR's) well and basically made all the right noises for me (removed any concerns of mine as a lay person but also as an enthusiast - we both shared a keen interest in LR's (& Defenders more specifically). It was subsequently evident to me there was doubt as to their engineering capability!
Now, I'm in Shropshire so it was a 5 hour drive (they're in Penzance) but I did have the day off to do it and had a budget of £450 all inc. to do the work (which actually came in at £480 inc. the dreaded in the end, as Lindsey recommended the use of a little more fluid for me).
So the mega flush was £226; the remap was £150; both plus the dreaded. I realise I have to be careful about having the remap accidentally wiped if it has any work done at a main dealer in the future, given the distance - but we are occasionally down in Cornwall once or twice a year - so not a big deal for me & of course, Lindsey did state that they'd re-do it for free if the stealers reverted it to standard tune.
On the way down, I set Cruise for 72mph (just a little faster than the quicker artic's!) and the vehicle showed a steady 30+MPG all the way down and having set off with a full tank, on arrival I still had slightly more than half a tank showing (as you get off the M5 into Devon/Cornwall, the road begins to get a little hilly - hence the average MPG decreased a little) but I was pleased with the consumption - for a 2.5t truck! (I did get stuck in some bumper to bumper / stop-start traffic on the M6 earlier in the journey - so that must have took its toll on the available fuel alas).
After a largely painless journey, (with my accompanying dogs having to endure my sing-alongs to the Xmas tunes!), I arrived & Lindsey, the chap at JH's, loaned myself & my 3 Cockers (in the very carefully covered rear of the car) a small loan-car and I left the D3 with him for a few hours. I'd arrived there at around 12:15 and I was on my way home for around 4.30-5ish.
He/they performed the mega-flush & remap & aside from an EGR valve sensor showing an issue on my truck (which the main dealer could not subsequently fault when it went in to have the "slight play" in the passenger seat done) - both jobs were done without issue. Additionally, Lindsey also upgraded the vehicles software including the transmission software plus unlocked the off-road Nav features (which I'm sure were locked before handing over the keys!).
On the way back, the transmission did feel & sound smoother - but TBH, this could just be my mind - subconsciously knowing that I'd had the mega flush done, but read on - I honestly believe it's improved.
The remap was quite noticiable, not rip your hands off quick - but much more capable. If anyone has driven a standard tune RR TDV8 (3.6) around 57 plate MY (which I considered before buying this D3 instead), then I'd liken it to this performance - much more capable and more effortless but not massively different if you understand!
So, driving back, the MPG showed 32.1, peaking at 32.3 but I did have a slightly heavier foot on the way home - and then forgot to capture the miles vs exact fuel added when I filled up to have worked out the actual MPG but I'm confident it's slightly better (& I only mean slightly). On the return journey; I found that when resuming cruise on the motorway - that getting back up to 70mph, the transmission did not have to drop down a gear as often - as it definitely did on the way down there - before the remap. So essentially; less gear changes so less wear, less revs & therefore less fuel burned (to achieve the same speeds), albeit with more available power which could consume more fuel albeit not as much as pre-Remap -if driven reasonably - if this makes sense.
Easily covered 800 miles since (being 300 alone just on the way back) and things are all just fine still.
Very pleased indeed and would heartily recommend, all in all - well worth a tank of fuel (and a bit) to have had this done there

TJ2k, that's an excellent essay! From what everyone has said I may well have to plan a trip to Cornwall when the weather improves. The Mrs won't suspect a thing when I spontaneously come up with the idea for a weekend away
If there's someone near Essex that will do the same service for a similar price then that's obviously preferable, however I like it that they update the software and clear the settings. Mine is a little juddery on acceleration and tends to knock a when getting on the power after slowing down for a roundabout.
