Occasional Problem Starting Even After New Battery |
|
Hi,
As the title says, I'm sometimes having trouble starting the car on the first attempt, even after fitting a new battery. It usually starts on the second or third attempt, and I've not had a complete flat battery...yet.
It's a new Varta, UK 110, which I fitted two weeks ago because the car was exhibiting the same symptoms, including losing memory on the memory seats, and thought that the old battery might have been duff.
I'm not hugely mechanically experienced, but given the car was OK for a couple of weeks, and is not being problematic, could it be that the alternator could be the root cause of the starting issues?
If so, is this something that any mechanic could diagnose properly, and a simple thing for him/her to fix?

UPDATE: Now dead as a Dodo. It 'clicks', but does not turn over. All electrics work fine, just won't start. Starter motor? Previous cars

If it just clicks and the electrics work then yes it sounds like the starter motor, or more accurately, the solenoid. If there are a series of clicks when you hold the key in the starting position then it'll be a flat battery, caused by either a drain or a dodgy alternator. The alternator can and does take the battery with it so I'd get it checked over as soon as you can. You guys are gonna be busier than a test bench in a plunger factory!

Thanks for the explanation Blue. It clicks just the once so its defo the solenoid. I sat and tried starting about 10 times last night and on the tenth attempt it fired, so it shouts lazy/sticky starter. I hope it's an easy fix, and not a huge bill (as I'm shelling out this month for a replacement spare).

Sounds like the solenoid, but it could be a combination of alternator and solenoid. A low charged battery could cause the solenoid to stick just the same as a fully charged battery could make a sticky solenoid work
If you still have the old battery I would charge it up and refit it until you are sure it is the solenoid, check the voltage of the new battery and charge it if necessary. If the alternator is on its way out it is highly likely it will ruin the battery, better the old battery than the new one. Carry the new battery and a set of jump leads with you as connecting a good fully charged battery maybe enough to make the solenoid work should it stick.
The memory seats could be a separate issue, the memory modules on the seats are notorious for suffering with senile dementure, a new module may be the only answer. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Thanks, as ever, super advice.
The farmer on the site we're staying at has tested the voltage on the battery and its showing a full charge (good). Unfortunately I gave the old battery away to the refuse site soon after fitting the new one (doh!).
The memory on the seat sorted itself out once the new battery was fitted, despite me buying a new unit from TLO (double doh!). Still, sounds like it'll give up the ghost one day, so I'm hanging onto it for now.
I'm going to ask my mechanic to investigate, next week when I get home from my hols.
Fingers crossed we make it!!! Previous cars
