At what point does the number of gears become self defeating?
ie. the vehicle spends so much time changing cogs it's not actually pushing forward!

Ah yes the Daf Variomatic, "forward to go forwards and backwards to go backwards" One interesting point about those was that they could go as fast in reverse as they could going forwards Cheers Ian

So basically just one of those rubber band CVT type boxes then
TBH 8 is more than enough. Fiddling with the ratios is the best bet as you need something cruise ok at 30/50/75
Though i bet its more to do with getting ratios suited to the government tests more than anything in the EU where as the states test is more real world and the best thing to go off for real world MPG FFRR Owner, very nearly became a D3 owner
Test piloted a new D4 XS SDV6.. Gone and being forgotten i hope!!

Another one here with an 18 speed, albeit a couple of them are nearly identical.
I would guess the 10 speed would allow a pseudo low ratio on cars without the space for a traditional one?Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948

Tend to think of mind as 9 speeder as only low 1 & 2 are sufficiently different from what you get in hi box to count, plus mine doesn't do 6th low anyway. With reverse on top.

Jetzt verstehe ich !. mines only a 5 speed so using your accountancy that would be 12 !!!!. Dont think you can include reverse though, dosnt seem fair ?

Are you saying that you don't reach any "speed" in reverse ? it's a "gear"...just because you are going the other way ...don't make it any less relevant 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021
