The chassis will gain a patena of surface rust that does zero harm. The rest of the D3/D4 is not prone to rust.
My D3 looked perfect after 8 years and the only maintenance, as far as rust is concerned, was to keep the tow socket receptacle clean and greased and I also hammerited the area around the tow electrics as this is the only place you can see the chassis surface rust.
I'm not knocking those who like to waxoil and alike and I am sure it would make the difference one day. That day though could be 10s of years away. Having waxoil on EAS components and wiring is not fun at all.Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948

As some one who's had vehicles from a 1968 Singer Vogue through TR7, Rover SD1 and motorcycles from the 1980's to present and a new Audi A3.
So the TR7/SD1 were rust traps. My 55 plate D3 purchased last year has lots of surface rust under it but on closer inspection the bodysheel itself was starting with some more serious stuff just in front of the rear cross member.
As for the Audi with its 12 year corrosion warranty. I go under that pretty frequently and when it was 3 years old big lumps of the corrosion protection on the rear body chassis rails fell off where water flings off the rear wheel and up the back of the plastic wheel arch liners. So I waxoyled that.
Modern cars are much better but still not perfect and our climate really doesn't help. I like to run things to 10 to 15 years old so its worth doing.
My last car, a 2000 523i BMW, was bought by a BMW club member and when he came to collect after buying on Ebay said he couldn't believe the condition. I didn't waxoyl that as BMW did a decent job underneath.
