WITH the new Range Rover, Range Rover Sport and Evoque getting most of the recent headlines the multi award winning Land Rover Discovery has been somewhat overshadowed but the formidable 4x4 is still one of the best premium off roaders in the world .......

Wouldn't question any talk of this being anything else..
Just because new & newer versions of LR vehicles are appearing...
doesn't alter (in any way) what is there - the DISCO & what we have got...
the Disco is a formidable vehicle that has capabilities way beyond we realise & may use use or need to use..
OK
the new FFRR is one heck of vehicle - the best car in the world its being said....ultimate comfort - ultimate capability - ultimate presence..little would eclipse this
Rolls Royce has the status credentials but what happens when it snows or it floods ? ?
...but would you ever see one of these towing a horse box or trailer ?
The new Sport (built on the same chassis) looks awesome as the smaller sleeker brother...(seen plenty at Gaydon this week)
we will have to get used to seeing these on the road....but the "new" will make the "original" look dated...the original looks from some angles "square & a bit awkward"
The Evoque...well its a Marmite thing I personally don't like them - but as a very viable means of making the numbers that will keep J/LR viable....this is the heart of the UK car industry which we all should be darned proud of..if this justifies the shared chassis/floorpan with the Freelander & other Jag vehicles to come - it broadens the range.
My bets are the "new" Disco will evolve with a shared chassis floorpan with the Defender system (which has a hard act to follow) ....tough, adaptable & ultimately capable as a development into the next decades. Disco doesn't need to get smaller, sportier or sleeker - its a working vehicle that has (hopefully) to do what its predecessor (D3/D4) does in an enhanced, more efficient way (ranges of engines to suit tasks & markets).
The Defender has to share a chassis/floorpan as it just hasn't the volumes to justify the development costs otherwise (data spoken to our group at Gaydon this week).
If you look at Disco 1 right through to the current shape you can see the lineage & concept - I just hope it dosent go "pear" shaped & the style / marketing people try to attract a different customer base at the expense of abandoning the existing loyal customer base.
I realise there will be those who post on here "I dont need the space" ..."I don't/won't ever use it" etc etc...fair enough either ignore its there or go buy something else..the something else wont have the capability / capacity / usability...& that includes othe LR vehicles (existing or future). Do spoil it for those who do need the Disco concept as we have it.
At Gaydon this week in the "3d cave" the brilliant LR designer who showcased the system showed us the golf club test used to make an Evoque capable of of taking a full set of woods & irons (including the driver)....I mentioned "did they test the Disco with a washing machine ?"....I explained of the day my SWMBO'd bought a standard 600mm x 600mm one with the weeks shopping...what other vehicle "takes one" without lowing a seat or laying it on its side..?...OK not something you do every day..but when you choose to do (or have to) - it can....in bucketful's
This discussion went on to scope out "what you do with a punctured wheel if you are in an XK" (the standard wheels wont fit into the boot (easily) & are a sod to lift out...again a fact of life & has to be considered at the design stage.
Fortunately (& thankfully) newspaper article writers don't design or market LR vehicles...they try to report on what purports as being news worthy.....they don't tell me what I should buy, need or want...currently I am well capable of making my own mind up...I did this six years ago & will again. Other on here will do the same the head will rule. Its not a fashion parade or a  contest..its about the practical aspects of getting & running something that goes far beyond the shiny thing seen in a showroom to that that gets the task done in a formidable way (even with a washing machine in the boot) BREXIT - done properly.

As long as Land Rover keep winning awards with a full range of vehicles that appeal to existing and new customers the 'accountants' (not designers) that run every company will be satisfied.
If the profitability of the LR is secured, it should have the ability to produce the specialist heavy duty 4X4 like Defender and Discovery some of us rightly want to try and keep.
So far Land Rover have got it right, IMHO, I am sure they won't stray too far from their roots with their next offerings  D4 3.0 SDV6 GS 13
