Maybe your wipers are not Kaput.
Mine made horrible noises but after I clay barred the windscreen, noise went away.
Clay bar your windscreen and clean the blades 1st

Its a piece of really fine clay, used by car detailers to remove that grime from yiur car paint work that soap and washing doesnt take off. Yo can use it on the glass as well. Basically You spray a some water/soap mix (or lubricant) on, break a bit off clay of the bar and rub away. Its pretty easy. All the grime comes off, and the surface becomes super clean and smooth.
You can buy it from places like autobahn.

Thanks for that tip,its annoying as I have only just bought the car and the windows have been polished by the dealer so they should be clean. The car is 3 years old by the way.

Normal polish wont remove all of the grime from your windscreen, it will remove some but not all, Using a clay bar or a dedicated window detailing kit will. 1997 BMW R1100GS

I agree the clay bar should resolve the issue. The dealer polish may have left some residue which is maybe to balme. A clay bar session will strip off all greasy and other residue and leave a clean surface for adding a sealant or Rain X type product.
I would also agree with the poster who advised cleaning the blades themselves. I find white spirit on kitchen roll is good - just keep wiping the blade surfaces till the black gunk stops appearing on the towel - then you know they are clean !
