help please - roof tent c/w roof bars/rack
Can anyone advise me please on the best option/options for a roof tent for my disco 4.
I am looking to buy roof rails and a roof tent but want to make sure the roof rack or rails (if rails are good enough) are high enough for the rear door of the disco to open and not hit the tent when opened.

Are roof bars suitable for roof tents.
You need roof bars rated at 75+kg
Then there is the width and shape of the roof bars to consider.
Aero style bars tend to be wider and rounded. Some of these may be too wide for standard and wide roof tent clamps. Standard size fits 42mm wide bars and wide clamps up to 65mm wide.
If roof bars are wider then 65mm you may well have to drill through the roof bar to attach the roof tent.
Consider the Australian Rhino Rack bars
Will it interfere with your rear door? Depends very much on what tent option you go for

Hi
I first had my roof tent on the LR bars using a number of "U" brackets, two bolts going through the floor of the tent picking up on a plate on the underside of the bars. The LR bars are rated to take more weight than the G4 rack. Don't forget that the roof payload is not that much, can not remember what it is but it is in the hand book. Using these bars it was not possible to have the tent open over the back as the floor of the tent fouled with rear light on the tailgate if both were opened at the same time.
I ended up using the G4 rack with the top rail cut off but leaving the front cowling in place in an attempt to reduce the wind noise and improve aerodynamics

Thanks for getting back to me, I don't mind modifying the tent fixings etc to make it fit the roof bars.
I'm just trying to work out which is the easiest set up to go for?
I will be wanting to have the roof tent opened over the back of the car and also have to tail gate open at the same time, so I need to work out which tent to go for and also which bars or rack to go for?

The roof tent I have for sale sits on genuine land rover bars
I have made a modified clamp which is wide enough to go around the bars without damaging the bars and holding it firmly in place
The back door when open is clear of the bottom of the open tent

It clears the door coz the tent sits on runners so it sits higher off the bars so clearing the door
