Hi Guys,
Am trying to be gentle on the accelerator to try and conserve fuel but was wondering whether there are any suggestions as to what revs to try and stick too ? Rule of thumb I try and stay below 2000 rpms but tends to be very dull driving..... I knew the D3 drank fuel pre buying it but it does do everything else so well....
Thanks James James favourite hobby is writing in the third person.

I find I actually get better mpg at around 75mph which is approx 2300rpm, than at 65mph (below 2000 rpm)
I guess the engine is using less torque at the slightly higher revs Never get mad - get even !!
06 D3 now gone to family member and still going strong at 265k
previous vehicles:
04 D2 TD5 - (clocked 189k from new)
52 X-Trail 2.2 SVE
various euro boxes !

I am not very good at all this though, I spend 30 mins driving like the pope (am guessing he drives ?) and then get bored and boot it for 5 mins. i just like to ensure the turbo gets a work out too ! James favourite hobby is writing in the third person.

My 2c = if you're worried about fuel consumption then you should perhaps change to a Ford KA
Sorry, couldn't resist, but really, why not just enjoy the vehicle?
Put your foot down and forget fuel consumption

I agree with the above posts ..
Sod the mpg and enjoy the vehicle, and its a very good point about the turbo, you do need to keep it excercised or it can cost you dear in the long run....
As the same goes for the rest of the car... Use it or lose it

Totally agree that the D3 is not the vehicle to drive if you are worried about fuel consumption, having said that, the peak torque is at 1900 rpm, so to use the gears to keep it around that rev point would be the most efficient.
I don't think the auto gearbox in the D3 is ideally suited to the torque curve, IMO it lets it rev too much. If you can be bothered, then use command shift to keep it around 1900rpm as much as possible.

A diesel engine, any diesel engine will benefit from getting a good ragging once in a while....a couple of times a month, get it up to temperature and hoof it in 3rd up to the (not actually there) red line....do it a couple of times and watch everything getting cleared out the exhausts....
The boys round here do it with the Volvo pentas and Caterpillar marine engines and they run far sweeter afterwards, with little smoke and a far more consistent idle "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak out and remove all doubt" ?.....what rubbish...
