Planning for Component Failure |
|
My D3 is getting to "that sort of age" now where bits and pieces are getting worn out and starting to need replacing.
It's a 2006 D3 S on an 07 plate with around 85k on the clock. All road miles. It spends the majority of its life ploughing up and down the M3.
I wondered if it was worth attempting to list the most common component failures and the age/mileage at which they typically fail to give owners some idea as to what sort of repairs they are going to have to expect in later years of D3 ownership.
I recognise that everybody's driving style/vehicle usage is completely different but it would seem that we should be able to identify an age, or mileage range, within which certain components begin to fail as an aid to both potential new buyers and existing long-time owners.
The most common failures (off the top of my head, and from reading this forum for far too long) seem to be:
Front Wheel Bearings
Rear ARB Bushes
Front ARB Bushes
Intercooler Hoses
Front Lower Wishbones
Turbos
Batteries
Alternators
Suspension Compressors
I'm sure there are plenty more bits and pieces that are prone to failure, so would it be worth attempting to list them and their average life expectancy on here?
Is this more of a Wiki thing, Martin?

Good idea,
Would it also be possible to list preffered suppliers, potential upgrades, discount codes and any other useful info ?
E.g Battery : 5 years or on xxxx symptom : exide xxx : euro car parts : discount ukpass25 :
Bushes are a good example, couple of interesting threads mention upgraded poly bushes, some good, some bad.. Gone but far from forgotten 55' plate HSE.
Replaced by Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV

Today's candidate for component failure is the trusty intercooler hose...
When did your intercooler hose fail (how many miles/what age)?
Where, along the hose, should I be looking for any sign of potential damage (appreciate delamination on the inside would probably not be visible)?
Did you replace it with OEM or silicone?
