Jacking and Axel Stands - procedure |
|
to the men who know (cos I'm not sure and would like to avoid wearing the D3 as a hat !)
Is there a recommended jacking point order in which to jack up onto 4 axel stands ?
are there recommended front and rear jacking points (ie under front and rear bumpers to raise both front or rear tyres)
cheers Illegitimi Non Carborundum

I asked Robbie exactly the same question last week and he pointed me in the direction of the Discovery 3 Jacking Guide:

Are you tackling your wishbones yourself?
I did my ARB Bushes myself. They were easy enough, if a little awkward to get access to the bolts. Let me know if you run into trouble, I'm only down the road from you (but can't help with wishbones!).

Woolmeister - thanks for the offer
not doing the wishbones (not that brave !) AJS are doing them
I'm gonna soak the bolts in WD until it goes in next week to try and reduce the labour cost Illegitimi Non Carborundum

They'll probably end-up cutting them (wishbones) off anyway to reduce labour cost...
You can just about squirt the rear ARB bush bolts in off road height without removing the wheels. Make sure you squirt them from underneath where the bolts fix into the ARB bush mounts, too. That's where most of the seems to accumulate. Don't know about the wishbone bolts. That's unchartered territory for me and, like I say, they will probably end-up being cut off anyway.
WD40 is not that effective. May I recommend PlusGas (if you can find it) or I bought some WD40 Specialist Fast Release Penetrant from Elliotts Tool Shop in Winnall. Worked a treat on my ARB bush bolts.

Looking at the guide, what I can't see is how you get the axle stands "adjacent to the lifting pad of the jack at appropriate point(s) D." (last page, raising one wheel) With the width of the jack and the base of the axle stands, they're going to be a fair way apart aren't they? Or does that simply not matter in the massive ladder chassis scheme of things?

The jack will be positioned under the jacking point (a clearly visible hole in the chassis longitudinal member, not to be confused with the compressor cover drain hole ).
The axle stand would be positioned a little further towards the rear of the car where the chassis appears to be thicker than the rest of it. The rear arrow (D) is where I had it supported at the weekend.
The jacking point and the support point are roughly 12-18" apart IIRC. No issue.

I have often thought about doing the same but was always concerned that it might 'slip' if I had 2 stands underneath then tried to jack up the other side to get 3 and 4 under.
Has anyone done it ?? Which is the best order - front to back or side to side ??

Personally I've found back up, then rear up to be more stable than side to side. It's important that your trolley jack is able to move along the ground otherwise it could be forcing the back of the car to push backwards off of the stands.
I only lift all four at the same time if it really is absolutely necessary. Bodsys Brake Bible
