Water in ATF... Options...? |
|
Hello, I have had my d3 mega flushed 8000 miles ago, due to rev fluctuations. It has now started to judder, getting increasingly more common over the last month or two. Had the ATF checked and a positive test for glycol was confirmed.
The two option I have as I see them is a. do the job properly and swallow 1600 inc vat for a recon gearbox, torque converter and external oil cooler.
Or b. try a new cooler and another mega flush + a dr tranny type friction restorer. And hope this does the trick for around £550.
Any thoughts greatly received. Many thanks in advance. Ben

Sorry to here that, been there too.
Problem is that there is no way of telling what kind of damage the glycol already caused.
1600 for a recon autobox included labor sounds pretty cheap and would be the way to go. It cost me twice that amount to have it fixed.
You don't really need an external oil cooler, just swap the radiator for a new improved one. CLUB ILLEGAL CAR WASHERS

I would go down the replacement radiator route too - you are going to have to change it anyway and replace the coolant - on the basis that you will loose at least half the system contents and even though you will recover the vast proportion of it, I wouldn't put it back in for the sake of about £50 of new glycol.
In fact, I would change the rad, etc, and change the gearbox oil and try the tranny stuff. Your only additional cost is the oil and magic fluild Mark.

Yes, the only risk would be 250 pounds for the flush and oil, but potentially another wasted day going to get it done and more inconvenience if it goes wrong again
I was under the impression that the radiator would not need to be removed and just blank the cooler attached. And the installation cost of the cooler would be less than changing the radiator.
I guess it is just a question of how much damage has been done by having glycol in the gearbox for at least a year... and that is any bodies guess

Hello,
I just fitted a separated ATF cooler to my car, at least now no glycol can get in the ATF, got indy to do
dubble flush + tranny, juddering gone....
From my point of view that whas in any case the first step to do. If you are a bit mechanic easy to do yourself.
You will find a picture on my gallery of the type of radiator I have fitted. Myne is a serck, but you can find also a kenlowe on the forum and the web " oil cooler ".
Others on this forum went this way also.
If you have a good look on the forum they are people installing the ATF cooler for a good price.
If you decid to do it yourself and need some help on directions don't hesitated to pm me.
From my indy point of view, if juddering getting to bad and no more cure, then will need change
torque converter 500EUR. part + 500EUR work +200 oil.
But I still believe that you first have to get the glycol issue completely out of the way.

Have just been through the same as yourself... An expensive frustrating experience.
The bottom line is how long you are planning on keeping the vehicle for...
I had the same symptoms and had a positive glycol test. Had the radiator blanked to the atf and a separate cooler put on as no one could guarantee me that LR have sorted the underlying radiator issue. This is a cheaper option by a couple of hundred pounds.
Having spent just over 2k on the cooler, refurbed torque converter and overhauled gearbox, I have no juddering, no fluctuating in revs, and have seen the mpg improve.
Good luck with your decision, the fact that my car at 141k on a 55 plate was worth more to me than anyone else clinched it for me... Automatic choices in Bristol are the ZF agents for the UK and may be a helpful sounding board.
