Hi everyone,
Wonder if anyone can help?
Recently noticed that if i drive on mud, or snow, or go over a speedbump too hard the it feels like the ns front wheel is either falling off, has a stone stuck in the treads, or is flat.....bomp...bomp....bomp.....
If i stop, switch off the engine, select park. Then restart and go on my merry way, it clears.......any ideas?
This happens in normal and snow mode 2.7tdv6 SE.

Looking at your signature, would the 22' wheels have something to do with it per chance?

What setting do you have your gearbox on? Do you change it to mud/snow setting when driving in those conditions? How fast are you going when you experience the noise?
Does it sound like ABS kicking in on that wheel?

These wheels have a prime function for sure but mud/snow/banging over speed bumps isn't it I'm afraid. You might want to check the load ratings etc as the vehicles NEVER came from the factory on these. There has been a lot of discussion on this forum regarding loading and the perils of having wrongly rated wheels/tyres on your car. Insurance companies refusing to pay out because of this is probably the least of your worries tbh. If for example, your 22's required spacers for them to fit as they are oversized, you might want to check if they have been fitted properly and that they are done up to the correct torque setting. Same applies to the wheels too. I read on here earlier that the correct torque setting was 130nm or 140nm - Check the hand book and make sure they are correct. Also the size of the wheels you have WILL affect the quality of the ride - this may also be a source of the problem. I'm just trying to help here - hate to see you get into bother unnecessarily

Ive only ever used 2 settings...normal and snow and mud....and its happened in both. The best way i can describe it is it feels like a stone in the tyre tread, or the wheel is loose if that makes any sense. Also sounds worse on full lock!!
If it is the abs sensor, what sort of price are they?...........i did think it may be the bearing!! 2.7tdv6 SE.

It could be a cv joint perhaps? Have a look underneath and see if the rubber gaiter is split - If so, mud and other detritus could have got in and caused some problems. Just a split gaiter won't cause it of course but it's an indicator of something else perhaps. That might be source of the problem?
Wheel bearing also a possiblity although they CAN set off all the dash board warning lights, engage limp mode and shut you out of any special programs. A faulty sensor can also do it but given the "physical" sysmptoms you describe It sounds more than just a faulty sensor My17 Volvo XC90 Inscription

Sounds like a CV joint to me. Might also be wheel bearing but most likely a CV joint.
Jack up that wheel so it's off the ground. Hold it at the 9 o'clock and the 3 o'clock positions and shake it. Repeat at the 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock positions. If it wobbles then it's a wheel bearing.

Thanks...I made it myself. Well...it already existed but I added the helmet to it myself
So...if it's the wheel bearing then you can DIY quite easily.
http://www.rrsport.co.uk/forum/topic28421.html
If it's the CV joint then most of the wheel bearing thread will apply besides swapping out the joint. As Steve said, the gaiter probably has a hole in it. Is there any grease on the inside of your wheel?
