Stone chips on caravan

Has anyone else found they have problems with their discovery chucking stones up on the caravan windows and chipping them? If so would it be worth investing in some mud guards?

Cheers

Looking at purchasing the front towing cover myself as i fitted 110 mudflaps, went to lakes and couldn't see the front of the van for muck, so not much better really.

Think the cover is the way i will be going, as it only takes minutes to fit/remove and keeps it completely clean.

All the dirt impregnates the cover and then scratches the front of the caravan and windows, have tried one and not very impressed after a few outings, initially very very impressed but once it has got wet and dirty a few times then a waste of time.

Cheers Russell

Thanks for the heads up

I never thought they would do that as the one i was looking at says its waterproof and breathable, but i suppose if you are doing 60mph on a motorway the pressure of the water on the cover is more than enough to penetrate it.

Looks like i wll be saving my pennies and sticking to the bucket and washing the van again when i get to site.

Cheers...

I think I will go with the mud flaps to stop some of the stones flying up, although its a shame the landrover mud flaps aren't slightly longer to stop more of the stones

Yes the one I purchased was also supposed to be water proof and breathable, it was also backed by my caravan manufacturer. It was great the first few time I used it and kept all the dirt and stone chips off the van, however I used it to tow through France in some bad weather, about 400 miles and by the end of the journey the front was nearly as dirty as the rest of the van, there was also signs of wear, rubbing/abrasion on the van. When I looked inside the cover there was a very fine covering of dirt/mud, when this dried out it felt like a fine powder/sand. I cleaned the cover inside and outside and tried again, next time was adry run out with no real issues but on the return home again heavey rain and again the same situation as before, mud/dirt had come trough the cover or ran down off the roof and behind the cover. Either way I did not like the result. The cover is now sat in the garage.

Had a few stone chips on the front of the van when towing without mudguards on my old car (Seat Alhambra), but no new chips since using the D4 with mudguards fitted, and that includes a trip to southern Spain and back.

However, if the roads are wet and muddy the guards don't stop the muck going all over the front of the van.

I found that Discovery mudflaps did not give enough protection. I had some Defennder/110 type fitted. Not perfect but much better. Have heard that cling film does the job but of course you have to have a new piece for each jouirney.

hello guys,

obviously mixed views on the towing covers, my opinion and experience is i wouldnt tow without it, yes i agree about driving rain eventually getting behind it .
what i have done and now do every trip is put a soft cotton bed sheet (elastic corners) over the windows at the front before i fit the cover. i have had no issue with rubbing since.

also the cover is designed to stop driving rain getting in the front section of the awning rails thus preventing damp getting in your van.
i know the extra sheet i put on is more work but i think it worth it.

kind regards
