I have now done a number of entirely manual tests of fuel consumption.
In every case the onboard measuring gizmo has been optimistic, but not by a great deal. I reckon the computer understates actual consumption by about 4.5-5.0%, resulting in apparently better consumption than that which is actually achieved.

Yes, I would go with that depending on how the trip is set of course. Full to Full is the only way for accuracy.

I suspect the computer regains accuracy the closer to empty it gets... If you persevere down to a range remaining of <10miles the error diminishes.
The unfortunate side effect of this is that you can be quite happily driving along with 50 miles range remaining, the warning light comes on, and within 10 miles the range can drop to <10 miles and the mis-firing starts.
I'm not sure if this means the computer is a) accurate or b) just a pain in the ar*e Long succession of Disco's since 2001...

Happened to me once on the M40... said enough to get to next fuel stop and the miles shot down. Settled and then as I pulled into the service area the miles ticked off almost a mile for each yard I drove until it reached 0.
Always fill he up at qtr full now just in case.

As to the mpg accuracy, I ran it full to empty, refilled with 83.3ltr, which calculates as 31.8mpg, the computer said 31.7.
Seems to give higher mpg readings for the 1st half of tank than the 2nd half, but ends up about right. Long succession of Disco's since 2001...

Mine seems to average 540 to 560 per tank. Can say up to 630 plus when just filled but settles down as you say at around half to 3/4 of a tank.
But does seem to go down rapidly once the low fuel light appears.

The fuel gauge readings are not linear. I mean the first half of the dial moves slower, and the half-tank mark is less than half tank. They should print a correct dial, instead of making it symmetrical so it looks nice. Blue
