Easter Highland Tour

Right, after much deliberation we have decided on a 'Highland Tour' this Easter... Starting at Loch Ness and then heading west.

We have Applecross, Lochcarron, Skye, Mull, Eilan Donan and Ben Nevis on the hit list...any other recommendations would be greatly appreciated as well as any little known back routes that may spice things up a bit?

Thanks in advance....

Al.

Yawn... smirk Laughing you go all that way to see an 80 odd year old castle!?!

Anyway, if you are going to Mull, get the ferry to Ardnamurchan (from Tobermory/Balamory) and go (via the furthest westerly point on the mainland UK) to Castle Tioram much nicer, a LOT less touristy! (ED has a coach park for the Japaneese and Americans to be able to tick off a scottish castle on their 10 day european oddesys... Sad )

and

then you can go north to Skye via Mallaig (ferry) or drive past Eilan Donan to the Skye bridge Loch Caron etc

Get yourself over to aviemore - lots of stuff to do at the lake on the way up to the ski area, get on the gondola to the top, aviemore gots loads of bars and restaurants and some cool shops.

All the other places previously mentioned Thumbs Up

We are at Ratagan and can offer accommodation/B&B if needed.
House used to be a hotel or we have a self-contained flat.

I've got plenty of tools also...not that a D4 will need anything Wink

Our boys absolutely loved the Fairy Glen when they were little.
It's like mountaineering on a scale that little'uns can manage.

When you are in Torridon, continue on to Diabaig, it's 10 miles to a dead end so you have to come back the same way but the drive and the views are worth it. There is also a good pub at Badachro where you can have lunch over looking Loch Gairloch - if the weathers OK!!! As someone else said when giving advice on one of theses trips don't expect a surfeit of filling stations, they are few and far between and usually expensive.
The message is if you think you might need to get some fuel - get it, don't pass a filling station hoping to get it cheaper at the next one.
Depending on your route, if you are using the A82, fill up at the Esso station half a mile after the first roundabout after you have come over the Erskine Bridge (it's directly opposite a BP station on the dual carriageway)

We have our hols up there twice a year. Love it. Fully concur with the "see it buy it" fuel addage. You just never know if the next fuel stop will be open. Applecross has a self service 24hr credit/debit card fuel place (works very well and ive never found it closed - even at 2 in the morning after coming out of the pub). Kinlochewe at the head of Glen Torridon is a bit hit and miss with opening times. Gairloch filling station the same. The cheapest fuel ive found up there was the Esso near to Erskine Bridge on the way up and also any of the Fort William stops. Lochcarron is usually quite reasonable and fairly reliable for being open. Gairloch has a new Chinese take away next to the Spar (highy recommended). We are going up there again at Easter with the roof tent so hopefully will be able to live off grid for the week....Usually at the end of singeltrack roads or the climbers car park in Glen Torridon. Anybody ever parked overnight on a beach anywhere up there? If so would love to know where............

Don't fill up at Shiel Bridge - wait for Inverinate if you must, or Broadford.

Don't use the Gleaner in Fort William. The Esso 1/2 mile further on will be c.6ppl cheaper...and friendlier.
