Refurbish caravan wheels.

My caravan tyres need replacing. While the tyres are off I thought I would get the wheels refurbished. They are bog standard steel wheels. I did consider the DIY route but they really do need something stronger than paint stripper, elbow grease and wire brushes. Think I might go for powder coating. Several companies in this are offering £25 - £50 per wheel shot blasted and then coated, (colour of choice). Can any one tell me how the powder coating will take the pressure of the wheels bolts ( at 65 ft lbs) and the balance weights that are usually hammered on without much thought to cosmetics?

I think I heard from a customer of mine that you need to remove the powder coating where the wheel nuts touch the wheel, or they can loosen themselves. Might have got that wrong, but he had a vdub who's wheel fell off and all the other nuts were loose.

You're correct, the area immediately under the nuts needs to be cleaned off with a razor blade or eventually they can loosen

Thanks Guys. 14 inch wheels as fitted to my 'van are not that cheap. Already have the wheel trims but have a Tooblock locking sytem on one wheel and that means removing the trim, or drilling the trim. Have done the latter but it does look very naff.

Regarding the balancing weights, just get them to use the stick on weights instead Thumbs Up

I buy new steel wheels and tyres from a seller on ebay every 3 years. They come fitted balanced and ready to go

I keep my old ones as winter wheels whilst it sits in the barn over winter

Mine are 15" steel rims for alko chassis, hankook 8 ply tyres and a pair is usually around £100

The ebay seller is a trader i think his id is msawcltd

Wouldnt be bothered refurbing wheels unless they are alloys when replacements are so cheap
