Lifespan of an Airbag?

Thankfully I've never had one deploy but what is the lifespan of the airbag system, is there a way of testing that everything is still A Okay Question

They are stamped generally for replacement at 10yrs old but having seen 15+yr old ones fire perfectly fine there shouldn't be any cause for concern unless the car has been dunked and water got into the unit but i guess there would be other issues to worry about.

IIRC no way to test them other than firing them..

Just thought Id ask, as most CO2 cartridge based flotation devices need to be serviced regularly, granted its a differnet and harsher environment.
No need to panic yet I've got a couple of years to go Thumbs Up

In my ignorance, I believed they were just bags filled quickly with air... and then a dealer showed me one being detonated on a bench, (they're not allowed to send them through the post). Wow that was a shock!!! Quite a significant amount of explosive is involved, lifted the bench off the floor. Enough to take your hand off if you don't know what you're doing.

I'm surprised we haven't started hearing about more people injuring themselves doing home maintenance on older cars yet.
Shocked

Sodium azide (NaN3) reacts with potassium nitrate (KNO3) to produce nitrogen gas and that inflates the bag Thumbs Up Sodium azide itself is pretty scary stuff Shocked

The way it was explained to me was that the bag is exploded out from the holder at the same time as bag inflation because inflation alone wouldn't be quick enough. Whatever happens, you wouldn't want to be holding one when it goes off !!!

SafetySodium azide is acutely toxic. Symptoms are often compared with those of cyanide, which is about twice as toxic on the basis of LD50. Ingestion of dust or solutions can induce a variety of symptoms within minutes potentially resulting in loss of consciousness, and death.[7] No toxicity has been reported from spent airbags.[8]

Air bags are set off by a chemical reaction, two chemicals combine to make a reaction which creates heat and a rapid expansion. The result is the air bag deploying and a fine chemical powder being spread aound the area, this powder often causes minor burning and discomfort to the occupants. The chards of plastic from the air bag enclousure can travel at very high speeds and also do damage. If you every arrive at an accident and find people trapped in the car, do not lean in through the window especially if the air bag has not gone off.

This chat just reminds me of a friend. She used to be a design engineer for JLR. Your airbags design would have had her input. However, she got bored with airbags and is now works as chief engineer on some very expensive yachts around the world.
