when is disco in 4 wheel drive?

Newbie thicko here. First winter with disco. Used to have a shogun.Nice lever said 2 wheel or 4 wheel (I think my Freelander was same) Sheet ice here this morning & some steepish hills. Read manual but it does not seem to mention specifically 4 wheel drive. I suppose I switch to "grass gravel snow" is that right? Any ideas how much more fuel gets used in this position? Thanks

It is in permanent 4 wheel drive. Moving to mud and snow etc will set everything up for you. The high and low button selects the drive, for normal road use you will always be in high but moving off-raod you could select low without using the mud and snow setting. Hope this makes sense. Thumbs Up

Well my friend, you did say it Laughing
The Discovery is ALWAYS in 4 wheel drive.
The controls you have are for different terrains and usage.
And you will use more fuel on some [ie Sand] than on others.

Thumbs Up

Land Rover....

.......have full time 4WD...on almostall of the vehicles they have built....
the systems do varyabit between FFRR/ RRS /Disco........& Freelander/ Evoke which use different technology...HALDEX

Some years back they did a pamphlet that explained the variances & the advantages etc.....LR are the best by far

.....but on a D3 / D4 its there all the time...there is no apportioning between front / rear it is all done by centre diff
LRE tell you that for most conditions you dont have to do anything but drive...i.e. point it in the right direction

Enjoy the experience !

D3 HSE-perfectly formed, passenger friendly...has real DIPSTICK
Jag XK-but sadly no DIPSTICK...HUGE design fault
FL2 has DIPSTICK..."real comfort in rear seats"
VW Golf wondermobile (?)..has real DIPSTICK
Morris Minor..original DIPSTICK technology..and a real KEY.

Welcome.

Without appearing to be patronising may I suggest you read the manual from cover to cover.

You will discover a lot of useful information. If you didn't know that the Disco3 is permanent 4 wheel drive I fear you may struggle a little until you are more familiar with it.

Free advice - fit a spare wheel protector ASAP unless you want your spare wheel stealing. They are available from RLD:-

http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/member-rld.html

You probably need a new jack too - the LR one is IMHO dangerous =- again search the forum.

Ask questions here - but search first.

Good luck.

Thanks boys. As my old dad used to say when all else fails read the instructions. Remember I only bought the disco because it looks nice from the front. I don't know how to work it!
