EPB Fault and loss of gear indication |
|
After wallowing, stuck in a muudy puddle about axle deep yesterday I now have a handbrake fault warning and the yellow warning symbol. Handbrake still works perfectly, no screeching or anything, just this warning. Obviously the two are going to be connected but any ideas where I should be looking first? Joined the BMWX5 45e group

I would strip it down and give it a good clean. Ive just done my rear brakes and cleaned off the shoes etc, the drums were full of crap and I do not go off-roading. A cautionary note though, if you are going to strip and clean (As per Disco Mikey's great guidance sticky) good luck with the T50 torx screw, mine were jammed solid. After much effort I freed one off, however the other is now 'rounded' so its a drill and grinder job !

Earlier today I also noticed that the gear selector number wasn't showing (only because the reversing PDC wasn't working as it didn't know it was in reverse) so searched the forum and found this:
http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic113.html
It turns out that because of a particular set of circumstances (in my case being bogged down in a huge puddle and trying to escape) the gear selector module can "forget" what to display. So all you have to do is to "train" it what each position means, by driving in each gear, starting with reverse, for 10 seconds (I did it until the number was displayed) and then switching off until the park brake indicator goes off, then hey presto its fixed.
I found the best way of doing this was to stick it in low range and do circles in an empty car park, although it got a bit tight in 6th, even at tick over. I also got a lot of very strange looks from passers by.
Thanks to all those who posted in the linked topic, I would have been totally lost without it.
I am absolutely amazed by this car at times, sometimes it is just too clever for its own good. Joined the BMWX5 45e group

Just a thank you
I have just tried this gear sensor training procedure and all is now ok.
Thought I was in for another expensive bill
Had this same fault 12 months ago. When several boards were replaced.
Last month I had the park brake pads and disks replaced as that dreaded squeeling occured while
on holiday in France

Spooky. I got exactly the same symptoms today but without the wallow, although it had been raining very heavily during my previous trip. I knew it was nothing to do with the handbrake as it came on during a gear change from 6th down to 5th at 40mph!
The above procedure has worked for me as well. Thanks chaps! A vaccine does not stop you catching a virus, or passing it on, or getting ill from it, really ill. It does reduce the likelyhood of you dying when really, really ill. Stay Alive - KEEP AWAY FROM PEOPLE.

i had this problem last week, i hadn’t been off -road or driving in the rain.
Re-trained the gear sensor as described, everything’s working perfectly now.

mine did this, and first attempts to cure as above didn't work. just tried again and it's reset after going up and down the gearbox [manual]
still have an airbag light on and EPB done an occcasional scream, usually when hitching up caravan and been applying it a few times, and maybe hen suspension in off road mode [coincidence?]

Had my 58/09 disco 3 into the LR specialists for new EGR valves ready to sell. Came out showing the amber EPB light and noticed loss of rear sensors. Battery had obviously been disconnected as clock was a couple of hours out. Rang them about it and was told it would be low brake fluid. Checked this and it was perfectly fine.
Took it back in and had them look at it and put it on diagnostic machine. Was presented with the solution of a new clutch at £1500. Evidence was that the gear selector was not picking up gears on display and something about an X-Y sensor. Starting to get beyond my paygrade and left totally disheartened but still not convinced that this was the issue.
A couple of days later got behind another disco with a sticker on the back for this site and came looking for an idea or two. HOW GOOD IS THIS SITE? Straight to this tip, out the next day on a big car park and hey presto! - sorted.
Thanks again to those who posted such good advice. I can sell the car now ready for the D4 arriving in the new year knowing there is actually nowt wrong with it.

Slightly disappointingly for some other less fortunate chap, the repairer had one on the ramps getting a clutch 'because it was showing the same as yours'. Experience is what you get what you don't get what you want
Disco 3GS 7st, Stornaway grey, 4 years from new (selling)
Disco 3GS 5st, Blue 2.5 years from new
Defender 110 TD5 van, 52 plate, green (what else)
Freelander S 5dr, 53 plate, blue
Freelander S 3 dr, silver, bought on 9/11 - welcome to LR!
