Rear brake pad wear - is this normal??

Have had the poor release of the rear handbrake (squealing on setting off) which the dealer has dealth with by cleaning the pads (though from looking elsewhere it sounds like its actually a spring problem) At the same time they also informed me that my rear brake pads were worn (5-6,000 miles to go) but the fronts were fine. Interestingly fuel consumption improved post service.

Is it normal for the disco to wear its rear pads first ?

If not Is there any way that both pads could wear excessively (if there was one caliper binding I could understand it) - eg poor valve release etc.?

As far as I could see whilst a poorly releasing hand-brake could alter fuel consumption, it shouldn't have any effect on the brake pads as on is disc based and the other drum based.

I rarely tow anything and if I do it would only be a tiny lightweight trailer.

Forgot to add, vehicle currently has 25,000 on the clock, occassionaly goes properly off road, more use on muddy rutted farm tracks, but spends 90% of the time on tarmac.

They should replace the rear hand brake pads (shoes) under warranty as they should not wear much at all, unless you are doing handbake turns!
I think someone else mentioned their rear pads wore first, not sure if they had the handbrake issue or not. The front pads normally do most of the braking so should wear first. If they are not the Electronic Brake Distribution or anti lock braking is not doing it's job (stops the rear brakes locking before front)

I had my rear pads n discs go before the front ones...thought that very strange.
 ...... always on the road less travelled 🚧

Big distinction here, front & rear pads do the normal dynamic braking, the rear shoes (inside the discs) are used to apply the EPB. Unless there's a mechanical problem with the EPB system( or significant mud-wading), there shouldn't be any problems with the rear brake shoes wearing prematurely

TFC, what would cause the rear pads to wear before the front, my understanding is the front pads do most of the work?

I don't know but would expect the fronts to be fitted with significantly heavier duty units than the rear to accomodate the extra work. With my 110 the rears wore faster than the front.

Don't forget that the brakes are also used by TC, this can accelerate wear on the rear pads dependent upon the amount of traction available. the rear pads are also smaller than the front so will wear quicker when the braking forces are equally split
