Power loss after wading - any ideas?
Hi there. Went out at 0530 this morning in Disco 3 to check out the school run route. Lane was flooded to about 18 inches (according to the gauge at the side of the road) for a distance of about 60 m. I drove through and back and then reported to wife that the road was passable. Went to work in other car.
0730 I had a call at the office from daughter. Wife had been through the flood. As soon as exiting the water, there was power loss. Max speed seemed to be 10-20mph. Very stressful school run. When back at house, turned Disco off. Waited 15 min then back into car and everything fine.
Other info: An error message came up - we're not sure what it said now. The engine was smooth (i.e. not misfiring) but without power. Tried Sport Mode - no improvement. Didn't try manual gearbox. Off Road suspension was used whilst wading - entry was slow then speed increased. Not sure about bow wave although wife says there was a "couple of inches over the bonnet" on occasion. She suspects the depth gauge on the road may be wrong (I noticed one read 12 inches in one direction and the other read 18 inches on the way back so they are a bit misleading!!).
Any ideas, anyone? It's a little frustrating since the school run is a 10 min journey and the alternate is a 1h15m round trip! 18 inches of water should be well within the Disco wading capabilities – I’m sure I have done more in the past. All top tips welcome!

18" is no problem unless driven through fast enough to give the electronics a good wash. If I was going through that it wouldn't be much more than a walking pace. Lots of film of peeps hooning through standing & flowing water (not saying that's the case here), not a good idea. Might look dramatic but can lead to tears.
PS If water's come over the bonnet it's either deep or the car's overtaken the bow wave and driven through effectively much deeper water. Too fast I'm afraid.

Best get the codes read to be sure. I would say probably an egr got stuck. Could be a pure coincidence that it was in water at the time. maybe thermal shock made the valve stick?

Thanks guys. She didn't stall and the car is now working fine as far as we can tell. ANd I doubt she was caning it (which is nice for photos but only through 6 inches max, I reckon) although I do wonder if she broke through her own bow wave.

It's deceptive how slow you need to be going to still have water everywhere, plus the instincts are to keep the speed up to keep going through. Even at the low end of 10 - 20mph in any reasonable depth of water would spray water where it doesn't need to go, 20mph would deffinately be way to fast. Slow & careful is way best, as the Rozzers are saying these are 4x4s, not amphibians.

18 inches is just a splash so should be ok providing she didnt drive through too fast - 20mph is a bit quick for that depth.
give the car a good run to dry everything out. may be a loose connector has got water in it.
you can get through quite deep water if you keep the speed down...... que favourite photos ....

My D3 used to suffer what seemed like power loss when wading deeply on a couple of occasions - it was actually power steering drive belt slipping - steering went incredibly heavy and car slowed - quickly sorted itself
Just a thought
I used to get really worried about something like that happening fairly often. Apparently it is due to getting close to a stall. I can do it driving out to the public road on flat dry tarmac, just let revs get too low. A switch off and immediate restart clears it fine.A vaccine does not stop you catching a virus, or passing it on, or getting ill from it, really ill. It does reduce the likelyhood of you dying when really, really ill. Stay Alive - KEEP AWAY FROM PEOPLE.
I've also had power steering belt slip, D3 appears heavy (not sure if it slowed). Belt is not toothed and can lose grip.
If vehicle is ok now I wouldn't worry.

Update - I've had the codes read
Thanks for all the advice. As I had a spare moment and a friendly local garage, I did have the codes read. a P023D was in the system. We cleared it and went for a test drive - every seemed fine.
I've seen people on the internet recommending "cleaning the MAP" after this code: any one like to comment on this ( and explain what's meant?)

Hi,
12"-18" should be no problem, just drive very steady, little bow wave can be good but steady is best just in case a man hole cover has popped off
sure it did not say 1.2m and not 12" if water on the bonnet dont shout, only asking...
anything at full wheel depth is getting deep, but then it depends if you "want" to go through rather than "having" to go through...
