Fitting an inverter to the back of a D3 what size cables are people using? I am looking at about 800w-1000w inverter at this stage.
I have one at present although it is not pure sine wave. The cable size instructions with it seemed like about cable the size of battery terminal cables which seemed crazy.
Hope to put it down the back near the fridge so maybe about 4m of cable from 2nd battery to there.
Any suggestions? 1999 Disco 1, 300TDi, Snorkel, ARB Dual Lockers, 9500 Come-Up Winch, Custom Bars & Sliders, Terrafirma +2in Shocks. Silverstone MT-117 33".

Well, 1000W is 84 Amps of power. So (according to http://www.powerstream.com/Wire_Size.htm), you will need AT LEAST an AWG 7 cable and you'll probably be safer with AWG 6 at that length, which incidentally is the same cable size as what Traxide uses in it's dual battery systems at the AUX battery terminals.
So cable size like the battery terminal cables sounds about right Dennis

Thank you.
I have Traxide installed. Even some cables left over from that.
IF there is a suitable Earth point at the rear of vehicle somewhere maybe one heavy duty cable Aux battery to rear rather than two cables +/- may be feasible. 1999 Disco 1, 300TDi, Snorkel, ARB Dual Lockers, 9500 Come-Up Winch, Custom Bars & Sliders, Terrafirma +2in Shocks. Silverstone MT-117 33".

Hi Snafu and do you know what is likely to be the maximum load you will be powering from the inverter?
BTW, except for powering devices with AC motors in them, like power tools, you gain nothing going to a pure sine wave inverter and pure sine wave inverters require more power input ( 12 amps ) for the same amount of AC power output compared to a modified sine wave type inverter 2008 TDV8 RR Lux + 2009 D4 2.7

Was considering it for charging laptop, phones, electric Jug for a coffee that sort of thing, however I can do the phone with current 12v, and if i can get an adapter plug for my laptop can do that also, plus I got hold of a Weaco 12 kettle so might not need the inverter.
I will run cable to the back anyway for more 12v sockets and either switch them or make them live from the Traxide. The single socket seems to need the key on which is a pain in the ass for charging a phone 1999 Disco 1, 300TDi, Snorkel, ARB Dual Lockers, 9500 Come-Up Winch, Custom Bars & Sliders, Terrafirma +2in Shocks. Hi again Snafu and a 200w to 400w inverter will be all you need and and have a look at my web site, where the D3/D4 dual battery kits are and you find a number of diagrams that should give you all the info you need to select and set out the correct wiring. 2008 TDV8 RR Lux + 2009 D4 2.7
