Done 22000 miles in my Freelander 2 and not had any DPF issues. Had two oil changes, one with each annual service and both times annual service coincided with the Oil Service Due message appearing which is linked to DPF cycles.
LR Experience D4's tend to do most of their work in low range and at slow speed and in my experience do not suffer any DPF issues.

BUT the engine roars when the DPF goes into regeneration mode, with a burning smell on stopping

its the engine speed rather than road speed that keeps them clear i think. so offroading in low range will tend to run at higher revs than bimbling down the motorway. I think problems occur if you are only doing a few miles a day at slow engine speeds.
where do the particles go anyway ?? Duncan

Carbon (what's in the filter) + Oxygen + Heat (from fuel pumping on to filter/catalyst) = Carbon Dioxide + hot smells. Just don't tell the greenies that the DPF decreases particulates but increases Carbon Dioxide emissions. No probs with mine in over 2 years, regular commute of 10 miles each way with a bit of running about at the weekends and a lot of towing April to October.
Make the noise about once a month, noticeable when driving - sounds quite good
