Reverse Mirror Dip Problem

Following the replacement of my LHS wing mirror glass, which resulted from physical impact damage my reverse dip is doing some strange things.

If I have my mirror set in normal position but pointing a little bit too far down for me, selecting reverse causes the mirrors to dip slightly (not enough to be useful).

If I have them set in normal position and set nicely for me, they move up a little when select reverse.

I have tried setting the Mirror Dip Position on the seat memory buttons (only memory 1 seems to do anything) it nearly works, but seems to put the mirror back to the slightly too low position when putting the car in Park.

Everything worked OK before the bash.

Any suggestions gratefully received.

Regards,
Steve

I had a similar thing, in that when I slected reverse they would dip upwards Confused

Anyway it was in the Dealer for something else and they "reset" the seat memory module, no effect.

On reading a post on here you need to reset the normal and dipped positions for each memory position and both keys if you use them. It cured mine.

I tried that yesterday for one of the sets of keys.

I will have a go for both sets over the weekend.

It's all a bit weird.

It worked for a couple of times, then went to dipping a tiny amount, and now it's moving up a tiny amount.

It seems that there is some kind of "stop" position as well when adjusting them. And it feels like when the mirrors moves a small amount it hits one of those "stop" points.

Will report back.

Regards,
Steve

Steve.

The passenger side mirror on my D3 goes up and down like the proverbial proffesional ladys drawers.

It does normally happen when, or soon after, I use reverse, and I've tried re-setting the seat memory etc.

Sometimes it goes all the way up, but most often goes all the way down and stays there.

It has even been know to drop all the way down suddenly on the motorway having been driving for ages without any gear changes.

I'd obviously like to sort it out, but I've learned to put it down to owning a 4x4 with 'character'.

Has yours always done this, or did it start with a bash, like mine?

I'm wondering if there is some kind of position sensor in the unit which has been knocked out of place.

There didn't seem to be anything obvious that I could see though.

And of course, now I've fitted the new glass I bet that I'll break it if I try and get it back off!

Steve

Edit:
From the workshop manual:
Quote:
On vehicles with memory recall, each adjustment motor in the exterior mirrors incorporates a feedback potentiometer, which outputs a position signal to the seat control module.

And also this:
Quote:
During a memory recall, the seat control module determines a mirror adjustment motor has stalled if there is no change in the signal from the related feedback potentiometer for more than 100 ms. If a stall condition is detected, the drive to the applicable adjustment motor is cancelled for the remainder of the memory recall operation.

I think the motor is in a position where the potentiometer goes past maximum resistance to minimum resistance which is where the problems lie.

There could also be some loose wires or soldering or similar.

I guess I'll need a new mirror unit to fix this.

Blast!

Not necessarily, it is more likely the memory module that's up the cute from the symptoms you describe, I've had 2 on mine and ready for a third, they seem to be a week point as they have been updated nearly every year.
If it was only the one mirror I would agree with you, but you say mirrors, in plural.
 It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Never meant to say Mirrors.

It is only the 1 mirror, nearside, the one I clobbered.
