What happens when you're changing gear in a manual and the box goes through N, do the lights flick off and on again every time?

ok ..presumably its going to be on while the EPB is off (regardless of what gear )

Thanks Wiggs for the clarification. I presume dipped beam would be on at night (as without auto headlights, the car doesn't know it's night) but you wouldn't be able to select main beam without actually turning the light switch on.

simplest answer is

canadian ..on when your in gear
scandanavian ...on when ignition is

i find canadian better for me

Does seem you need a special case, but sadly you're stuck with the two DRL options on offer
