I have a fairly stiff disco in the steering department. I have recently had to change the lower control arms them the power steering rack then the power steering pump but I still feel some times that I am fighting the steering wheel and it feels stiff and heavy which does not lead to comfortable driving. Any advice would be gratefully received. Regards Al Kelly.

check the lower steering universal coupling, as I expect it's tight one way, which makes the steering stiff & not even. remove the end from the steering rack & push up a bit on the slider, you can then try the uj side to side & check it's free both ways.
regards
Steve

Exactly!!
Was my first thought.
Me and my brother had the same issue, whilst on our "European Tour"..
The steering felt like very dry or stuck cogs..
We had brothers D3 in for some TLC at Steves about a fortnight ago, and
it was the universal joint in the steering column..
The universal joint was abslutely stuck in ine direction..
When exchanged for a new one, it was like a new car..
Best regards..
Ulf
P.S. Thank You again for Your help, Steve, regards to Father and Mrs.

Thanks Steve for the advice I hopefully will have time to tackle the problem this week. Can you tell me off hand is it a fairly strait forward job and does it need any specialty tools, as well can the universal coupling be freed if it is tight or is it best to replace it with a new one.
Once again thanks Al Kelly.

Buy a new lower shaft, not too dear.
No special tools required, if you haven't got a torx socket for one of the bolts a spanner will fit it if required.

Hey Steve I have just received the new lower shaft and have a question for you. When I twist the uni joint in one direction it is very smooth but the other direction it is very notchy is this normal or should it be smooth in both directions. Should I take it back and exchange it. Regards Al Kelly.

Some times they are a bit stiff, due to 'newness', which is different to them being tight due to rust etc.
I expect it's ok, but obviously without seeing it, couldn't be 100% sure.
