Hi Andy and while I no longer have a wiring diagram for a D3, if the engine bay fuse box is similar to the D4 then fuse 20 is permanently powered and that means you split charge relay would be on at all times.

So no but wait to see if someone can confirm that the fuses are the same in a D3 as in a D4.

Hi again Andy and I just looked it up on line and it is the same fuse.

So if you are looking at fuse 20 to activate your relay when the motor is turned on, then no.

~~~~~Thanks for taking the trouble.
Not sure if all the engine bay fuses are permanent live so hope we have an Auto sparky that can shed some light on the subject.
Andy, with that type of set up, you have to be very careful what circuit you connect to.
If you connect to a circuit that is powered as soon as the ignition is turned to ACCESSORIES or ON position, the relay can be energised before the motor is started.
Most 12v relays can be activated from as little as 9v.
This can be a major problem in that you can have a stuffed cranking ( main ) battery but it has enough power to energise the relay which then allows your motor to be started off the auxiliary battery but you won’t know that the cranking battery is stuffed.
In most cases where there is a message system in a vehicle, you should get a low battery warning but this too depends on how the battery fails.
The only time you find out the cranking battery is stuffed is when your auxiliary battery fails.
Hi again Andy and this may help.
On older vehicles, auto electricians use to connect split relays to the oil pressure switch. Doing so meant the split relay would not be powered until the motor was up and running.
You can NOT do this with a D3 as the oil pressure switch has been replaced by a pressure SENSOR and you can not use this.
BUT, someone out there may know of something similar on a D3 that can be used.
Direc feed from alternator.
Or an inverse connector from Park on gearbox. i.e. Will close circuit when you move out of park ( engine running and you have a simple both or main charge manual control) but you would need an overide if you plan to start car from aux batt. Also using the PNP switch would mean at junctions the engine is not workng so hard as only main will be connected.(provided you slip it onto neutral.)
 It is better to have and not need it then need and not have it.
